I am on the process of downgrading my n3DSXL 11.1 and it I am on part "VIII."

It says to copy the contents of the firmware zip onto the dgTool on the root of the SD card but I don't know where I could find the firmware zip nor where it is.

Can you help me on that step and maybe a bit more?

1. Go here
2. Use ctrl+f or f3
3. Type: firmware
4. Go to the 4th thing it finds
5. There should be a bunch of links, click the one applicable to you. If you need help choosing, just say so.

Can you help me with where I should put the file I downloaded on the SD card?

1. Create a folder called dgTool on your second 3ds's sd card root.
2. Unzip firmware.zip and place the contents in dgTool.
it doesn't download a firmware.zip, just a "11.1.0_to_10.4.0_n3ds.zip" file containing firm104_NEW.bin and firm111_NEW.bin

My mistake then. I haven't done this myself. I wanted to stress it should be unzipped, and it seems you've done that.
Just put firm104_NEW.bin and firm111_NEW.bin in dgTool and you'll be fine.
