Hi! I'm... extremely new to all of this. Today I managed to homebrew my DS, as well as alter my save file successfully. However, the entirety of the hacking forum still looks like a load of mumbo jumbo to me.
Basically, what I'm looking to do is swap some player models in my Omega Ruby game. I'm cosplaying Maxie for a convention soon, as well as bringing some battling teams with me, so I think it would add some extra fun to also have myself BE Maxie, ingame. I've seen it on youtube so it looks possible, but it's above my current knowledge level and I'm pretty confused about how I actually go about all of this.
Is emuNAND the program I need to edit ROMs? Do I need to extract something from my cartridge to actually get the ROM? Is there an easier way to do this? (Powesaves, maybe?)
Also, I'm sorry if I've posted in the wrong place, I didn't see a noob question thread in this subforum, unfortunately.

Emunand has nothing to do with that.

You need a way to play hack roms (= modified games), a Custom Firmware for example.
You need to backup your rom (using Uncart for example), unpack the rom file, use various 3DS files editing tools to do what you want to do (because you edit the game and not the save), pack the edited content as .3DS and convert it to CIA, or use HANS to use the modified content with your cartridge.

If you don't have any knowledge about it, you'll have a hard time.

Braindump your OR/AS cart/install and get a certain "Pack Hack" which I'm pretty sure is in some of Asia81's tutorials.
Unpack the relevant GARCs, then you just find out where Maxie's models are and swap the Maxie and player models. Remember that there's multiple May/Brendan overworld models.
Repack GARC, rebuild romfs and you're ready for at least HANS. If you don't get what I'm saying, look up tutorials on the things I have been saying.

No need to search where they are, it's in my notes:

From my research, it sounds like 9.2 is going to be my special number for this project... Time to downgrade. Thank you guys for responding! I appreciate it a lot and hopefully I'll be able to work this out.
EDIT: any specific firmwear you suggest?

To perform anything, you have to downgrade to 9.2 before anything else. ;)
Then, depending of your installation (Arm9LoaderHax with Sysnand or anything running an emunand) you may update to 10.7. (if you install arm9loaderhax you can keep the CFW feature while running a 10.7 system and if you use an emunand, your system will stay at 9.2 but you'll update emunand to 10.7)

If you have homebrew access,

then just follow this ENTIRE guide https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-2-(Downgrading) , w/o skipping anything.

PM me if you have trouble getting homebrew on 9.2. there's a way easier than Sliderhax (Cakes[Spider Exploit] to installing Menuhax)

I'm about finished with that guide now, currently downloading sysNAND.bin. However, although I have menuhax installed it seems that I can't launch it for some reason, so I just used browserhax. (Which was a bit tedious because emunand took a while to open.) I've tried setting different buttons, holding the button while turning on, soft resetting, and exiting the settings app, but it really doesn't seem to like menuhax at all. Any tips?

Im assuming Menuhax isnt working after formatting?

Because Menuhax is a modified theme. Fresh formats generate new keys, so a fresh format wouldn't be able to use a previously installed menuhax

So... Should I try reinstalling menuhax through browserhax? I'm not really sure what you mean by formats.

Doesn't the guide call for formatting multiple times?

and open the change theme menu first so you can generate files for Menuhax to corrupt, then feel free to reinstall it via whatever method

No, the guide didn't specifically say anything about format, but maybe they used a synonymous word? Either way: No worries! I just successfully got menuhax to load once I installed it again.

This is the most notable chunk, but atl you got hax

  1. Reinsert your SD card into your 3DS, press Start and right at the same time to reboot, then boot your 3DS into RedNAND using any CFW (if you followed Part 3 of this guide, you can do this by launching Luma3DS from the HomeBrew Launcher)
  2. Launch the Health and Safety Application (which is now FBI) on RedNAND
  3. Navigate to TinyFormat.cia and press A to install
  4. Press home to exit FBI, then launch TinyFormat using the home menu icon
  5. Press Y to format RedNAND
  6. Reboot back into RedNAND and complete initial setup without signing into your Nintendo Network ID
  7. Repeat steps 29 through 34, this is not optional (in other words, you must TinyFormat your RedNAND twice - if you do not, your device may brick when you downgrade)
  8. Remove any TWL modifications done to the device or PlaiSysUpdater will throw an error
(if you have no idea what this is, don't worry about it; most users will not need to do this)
  9. Launch the Health and Safety Application (which is now FBI)
  10. Navigate to PlaiSysUpdater.cia and press A to install
^Plailect
and numbers got screwed up. those are ~ step 29 on part 4
