hello there...
i really want to edit some nds games i have on my r4... problem is, can't find anything i can do that with for mac...
for example i want to use the program to edit backgroundmusic at certain places, possibly the sprites, but i really did this all for backgroundmusic...
really would like that if it's-a possible... does ANYONE know how i can find a program that can edit nds rom files on a mac???
really appreciate it if anyone could tell me that you know...

I'm sure there are hex editors for mac but I doubt you'd be able to do what you want with that. A lot of the popular ROM hacking tools don't even have readily available source, so... Bootcamp?

I am assuming x86 mac.

Most of the more specialist applications have not been ported to mac but there is a ndstool port (a couple of them actually but start at devkitpro: http://sourceforge.net/projects/devkitpro/files/ ).

While an emulator is not all that useful for a fair bit of hacking work Desmume does have a mac port:

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,8407.60.html is made using java so that should work as well. It is quite good even at this early stage but I am not sure it beats out any of the more specific applications aside from 3d or even crystaltile2 on the general application stakes.

A "program to edit backgroundmusic at certain places" does not exist as far as I know on any platform- those hacks you will have seen for the likes of tetris, pokemon, phoenix wright and megaman will likely have been done by hand using a hex editor or just be basic undubs.

Your main trouble will likely be finding a program to make and apply patches- xdelta is arguably the main patching method for DS roms although there are several other methods (some of which are better) but back on xdelta the mac port has fallen by the wayside.

As others have said though dualboot, virtual machine or adding in windows APIs (parallels/WINE and the like) is the way forward

Here's a list of ones that work for a mac:
Map Editor O' Happiness
nes_chr-x86
Script Editor Advanced
Tile Molester
Map Editor O' Happiness is the only one I would call good but the others are usable.

But is it good with editing ds roms? i went to the hack rom tools site and it stated it only works with 3rd gen pokemon games. Sorry, I know this is an old post but I too am interested.
