Apologies for the silly question. Do I need CFW for this or can it be done with just Hax and a console within the correct firmware?

No CFW, No Downgrading. You are good with an entrypoint (like Menuhax). But you can only install legit CIA's (check the first page for those limited games)

There's no legit CIA of Yokai Watch.

But there's a bundle with the game installed, Am I right ?

Well since we are now able to dump other pre-installed games from bundles that came out with 9.3/9.3+ firmware through a downgrade of those consoles to 9.2 and dump ticket.db so we can make a legit cia out of it with FunckyCIA or Decrypt9, here's a list of missing bundles so far!

Note:
Only Bunldes/Packs where the game digitally is alread installed (Pre-installed) on the console are good for legit cia game creation! (No packs with download code or cartridge in it)

- Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer (EUR) (N3DS/N3DS XL Bundle) (Already dumped and available!)

I feel like all of these methods are just snake oil, and all you can do is just keep retrying.

To be honest I thought the same - however I can repeat this with some regularity. It's not every time, but it's something like 1 in 4.

You're right, I'm sorry. I thought the game came as a physical cartridge in the bundle. But still, it wasn't dumped yet.

I tried pulling out Cubic Ninja after opening the app and it finally worked. There might be something to it.
