I literally bought Splatoon today and because of this I'm forced to update if I want to play it.

If I can get this right, NWPlayer is saying that he will release the exploit on the latest firmware (but delayed now) so it won't matter if I update, right?

No, don't update unless you're updating to 5.3.2 from the splatoon disc. 5.4.0 does not have a working exploit, however 5.3.2 does.

It says that to download Splatoon's update I have to do a system update via the system menu. It literally forces me to do this and I can't open up the game.

NWPlayer says the kernel exploit still works, and he also said the team won't release anything until 5.4.0 is supported. I probably will update then, unless you have an objection to this.

Nearly every bug we had no longer works on 5.4.0, so if you want to risk it, by all means. There is no guarantee that 5.4.0 will be hacked for a long time.

Also, the kernel exploit should indeed still work, but it requires a userland exploit as well to be used. So, pick your poison.

I'll probably update, as by the time 5.4.0 would be hacked (if ever) there would be a good amount of homebrew. Currently there is only a tiny amount :/ and it's all private.

Surely this doesn't happen if you don't have an internet connection set up? It seems bizarre that a game would essentially require an internet connection to be playable.

Splatoon is really fun to play in Multiplayer Internet anyway, so I'll have to use an emuNAND (which isn't out) to keep playing online with an exploit anyways.

It would probably go away if I don't have internet, but who wants to play Splatoon solo for months?

I recommend updating from the disc anyway because then you'll presumably be on the latest exploitable 5.3.2.

We have to assume that 5.4 won't be exploited unless told otherwise.

If you want to exploit your Wii U, DO NOT UPDATE TO 5.4.0!

We shouldn't be needing to remind everyone about this again, as far as I remember we told everyone that a new update (it was either 5.3.4 or 5.4.0) would be out in a few months and that you should block updates on your unit.

It's impressive how after so much time working on this and finally getting there yesterday, Nintendo figured out exactly what bug it was and patched it not even 24 hours after. Yes, Nintendo simply updated from 536.28 to 536.30, just enough to patch the bug we are using (go figure which one it is from the ChangeLogs).

At the same time, it doesn't really surprised me, Sony did exactly the same with the 3.3x bug by updating their WebKit source code from 537.73 to 537.73.2 before it was even released.

Why didn't they simply update to the latest version?

Why didn't they simply update to the latest version?
stability and security probably... why didnt every company go for windows 7 as soon as it got released? probably samen reason

EDIT: the latest version might have new bugs they want to find first, and if they start now there are probably 10 updates as soon as they found and secured them all. so thats what happened i guess
