Hacking Convert .3ds save file to work with .cia using SaveDataFiler?

I get the following when trying to back up my gateway card save
CTR Card -- broken --
002FF -- broken --
009C8 -- broken --
00C6F
FF40A -- broken --

Ideally I'd be able to back up the save, then restore it to my CIA version of the game.
The game I'm using is Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. I need it in CIA format so I can cross-play with the Wii U version of the game.

You can't back up a save file with savedatafiler from a Card1 game. You can only use SDF for CARD2 games and CIAs

how exactly does this work?

Yes, with a MT-Card, you can use savedatafiler with card1 games too.
