I'm having this problem too. It works if you unplug the drive and plug it after loading up GX. But that is merely a workaround and not a fix.

try 1229.
I'll try to find where the bug is with 1230+

posted in another thread:
I got a report that 1230 to 1234 have issues with initializing drives on WiiU.
You could try 1229 to see if it fix it. (but 1229 will not work with newer nintendont version, it's just a test to see if old version fix your issue, please report the result if you still have initialization issue with 1234).

I have one that I got for cheap off NewEgg by MassCool. It supports both IDE and SATA 2.5" HDDs which is nice. When formatted to FAT32 it plays both Wii and GameCube seamlessly. I think the model has been updated, but it is something like this

Cyan its a iomega MDHD500-UE enclosure but i also have a 500gb Toshiba STOR.E ART 3 but it needs the micro usb Y cable but im not sure if it works i couldnt find a compatibility list that wasn't ancient.
EDIT: i found this not sure if i do need the Y cable now tho.

Like I said, if you have HDD issue with WiiU and USBLoaderGX not initializing the drive, maybe it's the loader's (or console's) fault and not your drive.
Did you try USBLoaderGX r1229 instead of 1233?
I had a report that 1229 works fine on WiiU vWii, but 1230 started having initialization freeze, while the same setup works fine on Wii.

its not the usb loader causing my issue, it was the drive, i thought that the new vwii version might not be compatible with models that work on original wii, my 16gb kingston flash drive has zero issues initialising, neither does my toshiba drive now that i have a Y cable, some enclosures dont work with vwii as they did on original wii, and vise versa, make more sense? we need to start a vWii HDD compatibility table like the original wii had.

instead of creating a new table, we can add a new column for vWii.
But in the meantime, start by editing the wiki to add a vWii result in the Comment column.

edit:
For users with freezing issue at USB Init screen when using 1233 + vWii : did you update your WiiU recently?
5.3.x?
just wondering if the WiiU update could affect vWii accessed hardware. (it's possible to interact with it as vWii can send picture to WiiU pad)

i'll add the vwii bit if you like, and my wiiu came on fw 5.3 so i didnt have a choice in waiting for the wiiu exploit, anyways my drive works thanks to a micro usb y cable and my kingston 16gb flash drive works also

ah, you didn't use Y-cable?
So it's not a drive compatibility issue with vWii, it's just the usual "I didn't use the Y-cable like requested in all softmod guides" issue.
That doesn't require to be noted in the compatibility list. unless you want to specify that Y-cable is required (some low power consumption drives don't need it)

I used to have this issue, it bypassed by plugging in the drive right before starting USB Loader GX. This seems to be because of a bad HDD. USB Loader GX froze for me whenever the drive had to spin up (you'll hear the sound from the HDD). I changed to a new HDD and it worked perfectly.
Same if intializing SD takes a long time, it's most likely a bad SD card. This was also the case for me.
