An oft-posted topic like this is hardly likely to attract immediate attention. The rules regarding bumping and double-posting still apply despite this.

Any of the 2D Final Fantasy games (except 2j, fuck that leveling shit). 4's my best, but 6 is close. Chrono Trigger might as well be an honorary FF, and Super Mario RPG pretty much succeeds where FF Mystic Quest failed as a "beginner" RPG.

Pretty much the whole Dragon Warrior/Quest main series, but 8 and the DS remakes are must have. Too bad it seems we'll never get 7 3DS localized.

More modern, Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I'd also say Mass Effect, but that series moved further from RPG (as well as something I liked) as it went on.

Bravely Default seems pretty good too, but apparently falls apart later than I've gotten so far. Still, it's a better FF than any actual FF has been in ages.

It's chapters 1-4 are decent, other than that it's a below average game.
Play Final Fantasy V instead

Final Fantasy IX

Chrono Trigger's my all time fav. FFV is my favorite final fantasy (unusual choice I know, but I love the job system), which is why I'm tempted to list Bravely Default as well, despite its repetition, but we'll see if it stands the test of time. Mario RPG & most of the Paper Mario series. Does Mass Effect count as an RPG series?

I love the entirety of the Fallout series. The Baldur's Gate series is pretty spiffy as well. If Diablo (hack 'n slash) counts then we can throw that into the mix as well. As for the more weeaboo RPG's, I quite enjoy Etrian Odyssey and Shin Megami Tensei games. The Final Fantasy remakes on the DS were also quite nice.

EDIT: I see that Deus Ex was mentioned - I wasn't sure if that kind of gameplay would be acceptable as "RPG", but if we're going with the broad definition of the term then I have to mention the Deus Ex series and System Shock 2.
