no, no need to redo the backup. bc if you run emunand for everything, then your sysnand just has some minor changes over time.
Save a backup of you working emunand before updating, that my recommendation.

you do that with emunand tool

Wait make a backup of the working emunand? Before the beta my emunand was only at 4.5 since I got my gateway late so I didn't see much point making a backup of it since it was basically the stock one. Or am I missing something here?

it is just a good idea to have a backup of your emunand, since, theoretically, if nintendo releases a new system update that gateway do not support, and you update to that, your emunand will not work.
- but if you had a backup of your emunand, you could simply restore your backup to your 8.1 emunand and you will be fine :)

i personally only have a 4.5 backup of my nand since that is the most important backup, and naturally i only update my emunand when gateway support the new version, so... i'm fine :)

well i would say having a emunand backup is more important now than it has been in the past(still not as important as a good 4.x nand dump), but with 7.x encrypted games the emunand FW needs to be on 7.x or higher or they wont work.....so if nintendo ever does release a FW that doesnt work for emunand and you loose your current emunand due to SD failure or whatever you wont be able to play 7.x encrypted games either

Shouldn't it already be standard practice to backup emunand before updating it? It's common sense.

Hi everyone! I made a simple video about how to update from 2.2 Omega to 2.3b. Nothing special, just a little help for people that don't know how to do that. Hope you enjoy it!

Here's the link to Youtube: Link

Thanks for the video, but isn't it better to cover your serial nr and profile info?

i have seen that some of your posts have come across a bit rude, do you have a problem? you can word things in nicer ways, i'm sure people will appreciate it

Classic is recommended, but mine worked fine in gateway mode.

Classic isnt recommended at all, You are always advised to use GW mode
This!
GW mode is recommended, it will have an additional check to see if you are updating your EmuNAND or your SysNAND.
When you enter the settings in GW mode, you see "GW3D", then go to update menu.
When using EmuNAND Classic, there's no "GW3D" in the settings. (well, I think they didn't add it, it wasn't there on old version of Gateway firmware).

Update only when you see "GW3D" to be safe and prevent updating your real NAND.

By the way, when you have emuNAND on SD, it it still possible to boot "classic" or "gateway" modes with sysNAND ?
Or both modes are automatically using emuNANDif present ?
Of course, I don't see any advantage using sysNAND rather than emuNAND ;)

EmuNAND is always loaded if present.
if you want to boot GW/Classic in SysNAND you need a different SD card without emuNAND partition. (or edit/corrupt the SD Card MBR to prevent gateway from using the partition). It's easier to have two SD cards.

Edit:
Homebrew could be used to enable/disable existing EmuNAND partition.
a simple edit on the SD card sector.

I mean homebrew launched directly on 3DS.
not PC utilities to edit the SD card.

It's not written yet, it's just an idea for a possible homebrew application to develop.

Curently, EmuNAND partition are detected using a Signature:
Gateway Card : GATEWAYNAND
R4i gold 3D deluxe before 3.1 : R4IGOLDNAND
R4i gold 3D deluxe since 3.1 : 3DSCARDNAND (automatically renamed if R4IGOLDNAND is found)
MT-Card : MT-CARDNAND

editing the signature will result in EmuNAND being skipped by the flashcart (if they are only checking this on the MBR).

sure, ideally it would be great in the future for gateway to have some config menu, that lets us do things like enable/disable emunand, force a game to load in a certain language, maybe spoof eshop region in the future if possible, that kind of stuff.

Spoofing the Eshop would be so cool...

Are there any advantages use "sysNAND" in classic or gateway modes ?

Not really, before you had same compatibility, but now if you want full compatibility and e-shop, EmuNAND is recommended and is the Path that will be used in future aswell, new features will most likely only be incorporated in EmuNAND

when you make emunand, it is a copy of your system nand. so it will be 4.5.
having your emunand on 4.5 gives you no benefits, so you update it so you can access the eshop, and play games that require the newer firmware.

not using emunand, or having your emunand at 4.5, does not give you any advantages. the only one i can really think of is that emunand takes up 1gb of space on your sd card, so, you would save that...

actually being able to not use emunand would have a benefit now....atleast if you dont have your gateway card at hand and have emunand updated to 8.x, basically now classic mode will not work unless either emunand is on 4.x-7.2 or you have the gateway card inserted.......this could cause issues for people who dont have their gateway card at hand but want to play retail carts that require 4.x+ as you will be unable to boot classic mode

but really i cant imagine many people would suffer too badly with this, and if you do....well just pick format emunand again or keep a spare SD with your 3DS(but then you might as well keep the gateway card with your 3DS)
