Hello,

I am a bit confused because I've never played the series before and I don't know if I am missing much by starting at the Sons of Liberty then playing the third one. The psn store for my region doesn't have the first one :(

Can you give me some tips on how to play the series? Will I be missing much from the first one?

Thank you!

In MGS3, try not to touch the rear touchpad while walking around. Someone thought it was a great idea to map the knife to it.
I never accidentally knifed anyone while playing that game on the PSVita. Frankly, I think I've only used the knife once - when interrogating some guard for sh*ts and giggles.

In any case, you can start with any of the two games as their plots do not exactly intertwine - Metal Gear Solid 3 goes waaay back in the timeline so there's no spoiler territory to be worried about.

As for the tips, do your best to be stealthy, always hide bodies in lockers or bushes, do your best to keep the Camo Index high in MGS3 and explore the maps to find new uniforms, stay in the shadows or bushes and kill only when it's an absolute necessity - stunning enemies or avoiding them altogether is the best strategy.

no problem for the 3rd one but if understanding the storyline is important to you,the first must be played before the second!
but seen that you have the hd collection of vita you could try to play first and foremost mg1 and mg2 (the very first two metal gear...not to be confused with the mgs ones...)
and i said try to play them because these are very old and couldn't be to your taste
if i recall correctly you can access to them through the mgs3 menu...

but anyway to answer your question i think:

MGS1-MGS2-MGS4

MGS3-MGS OPS-MGS Peace Walker

MG1-MG2

i think the strings of order should be like this:you can either start with the mgs1,mgs3 or the mg1 string, doesn't matter,it's your choice but follow them!

Tips:

1) Explore. Alot of the time in both games there are area's that dont look that important but if you take the time to subdue the enemies of sneak around them and check the corners of rooms, you will find useful items. This is especially true in MGS3.

2) When you kill/stun enemies. Going over to them and picking them up and then dropping them will reveal items (Altho if the enemy is stunned, doing this will wake them up faster so be careful)

3) Try to play the game as stealthy as you can. Take the time to study enemy movements and plan your way around. Nothing is more rewarding that going through the game and not getting seen by any of the guards.

4) In MGS2 try and hold up enemies (Sneak up behind them and point your gun at them) after you are succesful, move your character around to face them and point the gun at an area they value and dont want shot. Like their head or their....

5) In MGS3 silencers are hard to come by, if you are just shooting enemies with the alarm already sounded. Take the silencer off the gun. Dont waste it on guards who already know you are there.

6) Most of all just enjoy yourself and experiment with doing funny things. There are countless ways of messing with enemies just for a laugh. Experiment and try and discover them all!

Also bought the HD Collection for the Vita. Only complaints are

1. NO CROUCHWALKING

2. NO CROUCHWALKING.

But the framerate and visuals are pretty nice so it has that going for it.

There are two ways to play MGS3,

2) SHOOT THE FUCK OUT OF EVERYONE YOU SEE MOTHERFUCKER!!!
That's kind of what I did deeper in the game when I got me some nice toys because this same old hiding and sneaking got on my nerves, though the sorrow boss fight made me pay for this.

so the 3ds version (the one nobody cares....) is the only mgs3 version that has crouchwalking?

I see no problems here.

Anyway, um, well, story is going to take a while to explain and basically you need to start with the first Metal Gear Solid. You can either play the PSX version (which is available for the Vita), Twin Snakes (if you have a Gamecube and it's a better, modernized version of the first game), or the Digital Graphic Novel (which is still PSP only for some reason). There's also the first two Metal Gear games (which you can play on MGS3) but their backstory is pretty easy to sum up and most of it is explained anyway.

Canonically the order is MGS3->Peace Walker->Ground Zeroes->The Phantom Pain (still to be released)->Metal Gear Solid->Metal Gear Solid 2->Metal Gear Solid 4.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that Portable Ops is debated on whether or not it's real canon. It introduces Miller and some of the other characters for Peace Walker but you don't really need that Portable Ops backstory for it. Portable Ops isn't mentioned in any other game and a lot of plot points fuck with already established canon. Peace Walker is definitely canon though. Also Portable Ops is kinda awful so better just skip it and play Peace Walker which is much better anyway.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is challenging but not cruel. Don't use the traditional overhead camera, it works in MGS2 where you're in confined little spaces but not at all in 3. Switch to the over-the-shoulder view.

Binoculars are your friend. Use them all the time. You'll spend a lot of time lying in the brush watching enemy movements and finding that little gap in which you can take them out.

For CQC you're good if you know how to grab them, choke them (or optionally slit their throat), and move them. There's some minor tricks to it but they're not necessary for beating the game.

Preserve ammo, you never know when you'll need it, especially on the boss fights.

Otherwise it's a game about patience, learning, and getting better over time. Once you get the hang of it you'll feel like a bad ass.

going straight to peace walker without doing ops is not wise....come on if you do that you'll definitely ask yourself
"how did snake ended up in charge of that army?and why?"
also use spoilers:the guy doesn't know the plot and is not nice to spoil the fun for him...

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
