I bought a 3DS XL with 4.5 on eBay today, it should be here Tuesday.
I have a regular 3DS with 5.x on it but it is an ambassador 3DS, so of course I'm gonna want to system transfer all the games off of my regular 3DS unto my 3DS XL.

I heard I would need to update both systems in order to do the system transfer. So here is my plan
  • Update regular 3DS to 7.1
  • Use EMUnand and update it to 7.1 and keep my SYSnand at 4.5 on my 3DS XL
  • Remove all internet settings on my new SYSnand on my 3DS XL to keep it from updating
  • Run the system Transfer on both of them, SYSnand on Regular 3ds to EMUnand on 3ds XL.
Is all this possible and can it happen?
If so, I'll do it and post pictures here of me doing it to help resolve future questions of it.

No no, the only 3DS retail game I have on my 3DS installed is the Learn Art Academy.
Other than that, it's all arcade 3DS games, GBA ambassador, NES ambassador, etc..

Would any of those update me?

Is it needed to do a system transfer in order to get e-Shop purchases from one console to another, assuming the sender is a non ambassador? My old 3DS is broken, and my new one should be arriving this weekend. It would suck if I couldn't get my games because the old one won't power on.

Yes. It's possible as of Gateway 2.0b2. Be warned that it isn't possible to GBA games on emuNAND yet. It's likely that a future update (probably 2.0) will fix that, but you won't be able to play your GBA games at all until it's fixed.

Well, I have no idea where I put that at. The DS kind of took a heavy impact and it fly away somewhere. But it seems like nintendo would have copy protection to prevent swapping SDcards like that? Unless you mean my E-shop info was on the SDcard

Okay, thanks for the info! :)

But one thing, you say I won't be able to. But here is the question, do you mean I can't transfer them? Or they will appear on my Menu in EMUnand but I just can't play them?

If I can't transfer them then that will really be bad.

To stop the speculation going on here:

System Transfer with emuNAND systems is possible in any combination desired.
The only games that update your system are cartridges, eShop games won't do this...
System transfer only transferthe tickets needed to recognise the game, so you will need to swap the SD after the process.

And about DS games, they are stored on the NAND, not on the SD; and they are transfered with System Transfer, including GBA games; which neither of these are playable on emuNAND, but still can be stored there.

Do you know anything about transferring e-shop games from a nonfunctional 3ds to a new one? I assume EmuNAND would work fine, but is it like worst case scenario call nintendo and complain thing? I've still got the serial.

Given that you are on the US, call Nintendo and ask them if they can do the transfer from their database to your new 3DS by giving them the NNID information of the broken 3DS (in case you had created one with the 7.0 Firmware); they may help you and just ask your to log with the same NNID account on the target 3DS (the one with emuNAND). No, I think the latest firmware I had on it was 6.3 something. Made the mistake of updating it before I found GBATemp.

The worst that could happen is that you are required to send your 3DS to them. Now that you clarified that you didn't create a NNID, you must ask them to repair your 3DS and then, after it is repaired, perform a System Transfer by yourself.

That's another thing I need to ask. Seeing both of the 3DS system don't have 7.1 at this point, neither one has a NNID.

What would be the best way to handle my System Transfer, including the details of NNID. Should I create one on the Regular 3DS before doing the system Transfer?

No, you should create it when you feel the need of downloading demos and free apps from the eShop, only then.

I would wait until after the transfer to create a NNID. It probably won't matter, but if you were to say somehow create the NNID on the wrong system it would muck everything up. There's no benefit to creating the ID beforehand.

Don't forget Miiverse! <3

Thanks kyogre123 & Deboog
That is an important detail for those who would like to do a system transfer.
I'll make sure to update my post when I do the transfer, I'll add the details you have given me along with some photos. Of course that would be around Tuesday.

I've heard lots of stories where Nintendo gave back purchased games for lost 3DS consoles, all you need to do is give them the serial number. I would just call them, explain the situation, and see what they do. If they don't give it to you, it might be a better idea to tell them the console is lost.

It's in 2 seperate halves. With sometinkering i managed togetpower breifly on the lower half, so I'm gonna tinker around with it a bit more, I know i have to attach some ribbon cables to get the proper circuit going
