There is no piece of Homebrew that could ever be made that would beat PLEX. WiiMc will never, ever even come close. Not only does it already NATIVELY run everything in 1080p (if that is it's native resolution) but it is like it was built for the GamePad AND you can access it ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD at ANY TIME on ANY device with an internet browser OR PLEXAPP. Oh, and it is free and already available, it has an very user-friendly GUI and is COMPLETELY customizable...

Been there, done that, have the T-Shirt....

It wasn't as great as you make it out to be, after a while I got tired of not being able to pause or rewind some movies (depending on the container.) then I was transcoding them with dedicated software and at that point I was like "WTF why not just make it in the format that plays on everything..." then I decided that Plex running on my machine was redundant and removed it. FTP does a much better job at everything you said plus has more benefits. Sure it takes a little more knowledge to set it up but it's soooo much better.

Rewind on WiiMC? Yes with every container supported (This is why it would be nice on the Wii-U, it's not that WiiMC doesn't support MKV or H264 it's that the Wii doesn't have the resources to handle them. Problem solved on the Wii-U.)

So yeah WiiMC on the Wii-U would be much better than Plex could ever hope to be or honestly any of the transcoding servers... they all work the same way.

Edit: To add to all of this multiple people can be accessing my FTP server at the same time and the resources used by it are so tiny that I don't even notice it is happening unless I am watching my firewall activity or checking the FTP logs. Running Plex and trying to play a game at the same time? I can see the frame rate drop... No need to check the logs...

You are either a simpleton, or a liar, either way, what you say is not true. You can do all of those things and more with PLEX.

Can't rewind or fast forward... You are smoking straight up crack rocks, guy...

By the way, there are plugins for every file format known to man as well for PLEX, and as I said before, all in native 1080p if that happens to be your file resolution.

I'm sorry to join the offtopic (maybe a mod can split us off somewhere) but I want to join the "Plex is a pile of Pap" train.

Yes the UI is nice, but it failed to identify ANY of my media correctly and has no "file system" mode for those of us who already have a nicely organised media collection. Oh, they have a way of identifying files by filename but that involves renaming ALL media into a monstrously untidy format - listen up software creators.... STOP telling people HOW to organize their files. If you insist on using libraries and not including a file browser mode then you ASK the user how their files are named, you DONT TELL THEM!

I gave Servio a go which, while it's UI was not nearly as nice, at least enabled me to set it up to browse based on directory structures. If I got a WiiU that would be what I would use; but a native Media Centre is always preferable - eases up the strain on my computer which has better things to do than sit around encoding and streaming media.

I am glad you like Plex a lot you seem to a very vocal advocate of it... But hey insults that's surely a way your going to sway my opinion :)

I have my preference you have yours lets call it a day shall we? :)

Hey everyone if you want to use something other than Plex don't mention it around this guy, he gets pretty angry about it... lol

Xbmc is so much better than Plex.
That's all.

Plex is not Wii/Wii U homebrew so how can you even compare the two. Plex doesn't run on the Wii/Wii U. Shouldn't you be comparing Plex to similar computer programs.

Like the post above this one, I use xbmc from my computer to watch on my tv.

PLEX is just terrible. XBMC is really easy to use. PLEX on PC doesn't even let you use your mouse to control the POS

You can, actually. Enable it in the settings.

Plex is great for an almost zero-configuration home media server setup. I'd love to see it on the WiiU, but that'd very doubtful. A port of XBMC is more likely.

EDIT:
Plex is easy to setup and works with Roku. PS3 Media Server works better for DLNA devices. But I prefer XBMC as a media center.

Plex is not Wii/Wii U homebrew so how can you even compare the two.

When comparing "ways to access media on the WiiU" it's absolutely valid. Current options are use WiiMC in vWii mode, or run a media server on your PC and access media via the Web Browser.

The two issues I had with WiiMC on the Wii when I ran it a couple of years ago were that it was too crashy, and it wasn't able to (or more accurately, the Wii wasn't able to) handle some of the HD video formats. It did allow a sensible way to browse media though! :)

Can plex handle external subs? Preferably .srt?

How do you mean "external". Do you mean external as in "in a separate file (ie srt) on the server"? In which case the answer is yes. Or do you mean "on the client as opposed to hosted on the server"? In which case I don't know, but would doubt it. Our resident expert will be able to help out, no doubt :)

I'm the one who moved your offtopic answers from another thread, because you started talking about how PLEX was the best, WiiMC wasn't, etc.
and you didn't have any problem talking about it in another unrelated topic's thread, but moving all this PLEX discussion you created to its own thread is a problem?

If you don't want your name attached to text on internet, think before posting it (being the starter of a thread or inside another thread doesn't make the problem different).

I'm closing this thread if you don't want your subject to be discussed here.
