Or at least have a high failure rate. Why go with clones in the first place?
I wouldn't do it myself (I have a DS2) but because they're cheaper is a valid reason. Also, it's very likely but impossible to say for sure that they'll have a high failure rate. My old R4 clone worked for years and felt much sturdier than the DS2.

Because Gateway is at $80 and the clones at $79, they are cheapa!

Well of course! It makes sense now! Sorry to burst their bubble, but the people who make the clones are going to release a few updates and then stop supporting them; only the GW will give real support. If you get a clone, it fails and bricks your 3DS for some reason, it's your own fault.

Eh, fair enough. There are exceptions, but in general, they're not that great IMHO.

Didn't Acekard start out as a clone? I had an Acekard 2i on my DSi XL for 3-4 years and it was good to me in that time. Let's be honest, clones are a good thing because they spur innovation/competition. What I don't like is the blatant copying like 3DSLink is currently doing. Who knows? They may just go the Acekard route and distance themselves from Gateway's work by adding features themselves. So far, though, they're just taking Gateway's work and slapping their name on it. That's what I don't like.

Hold on!
3DS Link and R4i Gold teams are the same.
R4i Gold Team have been known for their fine support to their DS flashcards(I dare to say they have the 2nd best DS flashcard).
Both 3DS Link and R4i Gold have already received a firmware update.
We can't say their flashcarts will be or not well supported, but considering everything so far,
there is plenty of reason to believe they will have a decent support all around.

Love how R4ids.cn team isn't even attempting to hide it's also the maker of 3DS Link.

You know. It's quite funny because that was the general consensus for the GW3DS team before the GW3DS was released. It was biased due to what past flashcart teams have done. Released a product and then dropped support. I'm not saying they aren't going to but there's no evidence to support they are going to. I've also yet to see any PCB pictures to show the quality. It's like being said there's a brand new 3DS flashcart and immediately calling it cheap because your R4X Super Deluxe Edition is cheap. But you haven't even seen it yet.

I'd also like to mention last I heard the GW3DS is being sold to retailers for $55~ and in order for stores to make profit they've marked it up to $80~.

I wonder, why making two different 3DS flashcards if they're exactly the same product and are going to compete with each other?

But the checksums are the same for both files. I don't see how they're not the same launchers yet have the exact same checksum.

No idea. Again, I don't want to buy any clones until we know how much they can be trusted.

Right, but I'm still weary that it could happen. I personally don't want to buy a clone and have support killed off soon after, that's all. But then again, I haven't been right about anything regarding these 3DS flashcarts either, so yeah :P

They do it to pressure gateway. If there's one thing customers like, its to have options. IF they see 2 cards selling for $60 and 1 for $80, it makes gateway's look overpriced for no reason. Also, People are fickle as hell when it comes to appearances. If i knew nothing about the flashcard scene and only saw the card stickers, i would choose the r4i deluxe gold because of its appearance alone.

Ohh I see, you originally meant you'd wait to see it reviewed before deciding if you should buy it. I thought you meant you'd wait to see it reviewed before you can decide whether the R4ids.cn and the 3DSLink launcher.dat files are identical. My bad :P

No worries, but there are other factors preventing me from getting a flashcart for my 3DS at moment, money being one such obstacle. I don't want to get one and end up screwing up my system, the card itself, etc.

Here is a photo of the R4i Gold Deluxe PCB.

But will these clone teams actually support the cards and not just have one update and go silent?

That, plus being on a 6.x firmware, etc. :( I hear ya. It's still fun to follow the scene though. I don't even have a Gateway myself and probably know more about it than the average person!
