With Microsoft and Intel becoming "outright competitors," Hewlett-Packard sees most of the PC growth happening outside the Windows market. That means Android, Chrome, and Ubuntu.

Looks like the computing industry is splintering faster than most thought it would. even Valve with there upcoming OS is taking a bit of the pie. I do wonder though with this much choice is it really good for us or will it cause a large gap? Food for thought I guess.

I am a Glaceon now, named Crystal :P

Also you've got my interesting HP :creep:
Feel the burn, M$! :tpi:

This does interest me though because they are pre-configured for Ubuntu that most likely means other Linux distros will run on there with little to no hassle!

Too bad that HP computers suck and nobody cares about them. ;O;

On a more serious note, good. I personally dislike the idea of buying computers with a pre-installed system chosen for you - I think it's the consumer who should choose the OS he or she wants to run on the machine or even get the machine without an OS if he or she already owns an OS license.

I mean, seriously, there's nothing better than collecting a pile of laptops, each with their own separate Windows license sticker on the bottom that never gets to see any use because hey! Your new laptop will come with an OS pre-installed anyways! And yes, I know there's an option to buy a laptop without an OS in certain stores, but those stores are few and far between.

I agree, for me it's worse because part of the price on the laptop is the OS, an OS I uninstall as soon as I get home. Meaning I spent money on something I never used nor intend to ever use.
At least with an Ubuntu laptop you're not paying Ubuntu, you are paying for the laptop.

I can't wait to grab a PC that runs next to no established software at all.

As long as it plays Angry Birds and surfs web pages, there is no need for anything else.

Hello throwback from 2005! Linux has come a long way not to mention Wine has come a long way. The whole "Linux has no gaems/software!" argument is way out of date.

Damn it, you took my post

EDIT: @TheCatboy, that may be true (about Linux and Wine), but the average user probably knows shit all about Linux and Wine and compatibility, IMO this "change" HP is doing really only appeals to a niche market. I doubt the majority of PC users will just up and change from Windows for stuff like this.

The same could be said about Windows 8, a lot of people didn't like the changes in it, but ended up keeping it because they didn't want the hassle of changing their OS. I doubt this will bring Linux up in the world as the dominate OS, but I am pretty sure will sway some of the users who don't care to change or end up enjoy it.
Most people have grossly out of date opinions on Linux because they remember using it once and having a bad experience, so they just assume it will always be bad and never try it again. Maybe this will change some more minds about Linux.
Personally for an advent Linux user I am pretty happy to see this, why? Because that means all the parts either work out of the box for Linux or they won't be hard to work with, compared to my boyfriend's HP Pavilion dv6-6c11nr Entertainment Notebook which every Ubuntu past 12.04 won't boot, until you install 12.04, then the drivers, then upgrade. These laptops look like something I can get into.

People seem to forget here: the generic x86 platform that Microsoft has been developing for during the last 20+ years can run any software, not just Windows.

Chromebooks have specialized hardware put in place to lock you into the ChromeOS ecosystem and stop you loading any other OS on the device.

...and Microsoft is the evil company, apparently.

Dell was selling Inspiron laptops at one point that came with Ubuntu pre-installed instead of Windows. It was the exact same price, pretty much defeating the purpose of not including an OS that isn't free.
