XCOM The... uh, XCOM, was announced all the way back in 2010 to great controversy and consternation from long term fans. Since then, the project has had plenty of setbacks. It's been delayed several times, and rumors emerged that the FPS was becoming a budget-titled TPS.

Well, the game's roller-coaster ride of a development cycle has taken another strange turn, the kind that gives everyone on board whiplash and uncomfortable chafing.

A tipster pointed out to Digital Trends that the game’s official website appears to have been removed. Visitors are greeted with a 404 error message, indicating that the server is live but the content that the URL should be connecting with isn’t there. A cached version of the site can be viewed for a brief moment before a lingering age gate redirect kicks in, resulting in another 404 error from the seemingly absent age gate.

It is entirely possible that there’s been a technical hiccup on 2K Games’ side, though that seems unlikely. The Enemy Unknown website is connected to the XCOM.com url as well, and that one is running just fine. What’s more, all evidence of previously released trailers and gameplay footage appear to have been scrubbed from the official 2K Games YouTube channel. You can still find that content hosted by a variety of third-party sources, but nothing official from 2K.

So what the hell's going on? Well, domain's have been popping up for something called "The Bureau" all around the internet. Considering the game's plot, there could be some sort of relation. Considering how disconnected this title is from the XCOM series, and considering how we've already received a relatively faithful update, going with a different name wouldn't be a bad idea.

Or maybe, just maybe, XCOM has been XCOM-municated.

Only time will tell. Then again, considering the game's lengthy stay in development hell, we'll probably encounter actual aliens long before then.

Seeing how it was XCOM in name only, releasing it under a new name would probably be for the best.

I would argue that they should have released the recent TBS X-COM as a different title, seeing as they dummied it down for the console crowd. It would have had the same effect as renaming the FPS. I would have enjoyed it more.

ShadowSoldier confirmed for casualscum peasantry.

Seriously, though, what looks boring about it? I'm not even much for its genre and the games seem to be a fun, challenging experience.
Iono, could be the genre as I don't see any appeal in them, that and it sort of just looks generic.

No, and read my other post as to why.
I really suggest that you do, it's great science fiction. Now, the old ones like to kick the player in the gut a little bit too much at times and they tend to be unfair, but they've achieved pretty much legendary status due to how much fun they are. The new one is buckets of fun as well, albeit a tad too easy for my taste, but the quality bar is way up there.

Yeah.... I'll pass.
