I am starting this tread just to get some feed back on game difficulty preferences.

I understand there are some people who enjoy a game that they can just sit down and relax with, something that will challenge them, but not at the expense of wanting to throw the controller or mouse through the screen.

Then there are others who grew up with the Atari 2600 and NES who prefer a game that is extensively difficult, but once you learn the map, enemy placement, and so forth, you are able through memorization and skill, to complete the map eventually.

Granted there are also other elements that make a game hard aside of the life and death factor, like puzzles, platforming, back tacking/exploring, and the like which should also be considered.

So if you all will, please share with me what to you makes for a good game and to what degree you like your difficulty and so forth.

Balance of its constituent elements.

A good story can be spoiled by horrendous game mechanics, no amount of mechanics will help a game when it's lacking in the art department, even the most advanced graphics will help a game when the story is boring.

A great game has to be acceptable in all departments - only from that point can it excel in one or more of them.

Gameplay and music is what matters most to me, story and graphics doesn't even make half of what I consider great in games. Graphics only needs to be serviceable to make the gameplay work, but I do like it when games can be stylish and memorable through interesting art designs though, so memorable design is the third most important thing.

what makes a good game? releasing the same game since 90's with updated roster/weapons, and graphics obviously.

It's too subjective a question - you can't please all of the people all of the time. The best advice is to concentrate on all the aspects that make up the game and ensure they're as perfect as can be. Choose the audience you're aiming for rather than trying to appeal to everyone.

Well, it kind of depends on the person's opinion. For an example, for me, IMO, WHERE THERE ARE ADVENTURES, FREE-ROAMING, NICE STORY-LINE, LITTLE PUZZLES, MYSTERIES, AND, DECENT GRAPHICS. Those are the ones for me. For other people, it may be just the content. I know a pervert who says games are good if there is nudity in there.

I'd go with "if it has immersion". Immersion is where you forget about your surroundings and be in that gaming zone where there is just you playing.

There's a wide range of things that make or break immersion, but I don't think there is a silver bullet here (in other words: a formula that always works). Let's see...

Immersion-breaking things (to be avoided):
-bad controls
-a wonky difficulty curve
-game crashing bugs
-storyline that makes no sense (this isn't to say it may not be campy. But you can't do campy AND attempt a decent storytelling. Case point: Other M).
-probably more

Immersion-enhancing things:
-challenging but not impossible.
-a storyline that stays true to itself
-fluent movement
-decent atmosphere
-also: probably more

Each genre obviously also has their own accents (in platforming, the storyline is pretty much nil, to name one. And for games like 999, even the fluent movement isn't much of an issue). But I'd be lying if I claimed to know all these.

You know, so far, nothing looks as realistic as Mortal Kombat on the Genesis.
The genesis version is too pixelated and color limited... If you find the genesis version impressive, take a look at the arcade version. I really think it looks more realistic than even the latest Xbox 360 version of Mortal Kombat!
