This isn't a question concerning whether 3ds games are hacked in order to make digital copies for flash cards.
This is a question concerning whether or not it is possible for anyone to hack a 3ds game in order to cheat.
Is it possible yet?
Because...
I was playing mario kart 3ds online and it seemed like someone had a tremendous advantage,
so much that they were finished with 3 laps in the time it took everyone to barely complete the 2nd lap.
I'm not a lousy player by no means, neither were the other racers, and this is after the eshop patch.
even if he was able to successfully snake his kart, there was just no way that I could see how he managed to get that far without several burst mushroom items in first.
I monitored the map during a second match and his icon below on the map was clearly moving much faster than anyone elses.

the codebreaker and actionreplay codes for regular DS games killed competitiveness online but it was fun if you wanted extra powerups in single player modes.
I was wondering if anyone has already done this or if anyone knows they will be coming out with something similar soon.
Thanks

There are glitches in Mario Kart 7 that people exploit. Nintendo even put a patch in the Eshop for it.

There are no cheat devices so far, mostly because no one has released a hack or device to cheat that Datel can reverse engineer yet.

I think these people really know how to choose their kart parts and they have some tricks, like sometimes they can even avoid blue shells. But I always wonder if they could be cheating too, I mean people say 3ds is not hacked and all but what if one could mess with the data that is transmitted to the internet?

Well technically anybody with a router and a PC has the physical tools to do that (DNS redirection and filtering the data), but that's a hell of a lot of effort to go through to cheat at mario kart, as they'd still need to reverse-engineer the data stream and find out how to inject or modify data in realtime. This is not stuff you can find a tutorial on youtube about, and definitely not stuff a 12 year old can google to find out how to do (successfully) though, as anything most people could use would be pre-made software and instructions (on the level of current hacks for systems at least), at which point people would know about it publicly.

It's likely they just know lots of fancy tricks and how to exploit the physics and stuff. Like the stuff you can see here.

I haven't heard of any cheat devices for the 3DS but i can tell you some tips to why they may be so fast. mario kart 7 has some hidden stats on the vehicle parts a notable one is the mini turbo stat. which effects the boost you get from drifting. mini turbo tends to be better on karts that focus on handling and acceleration though there are some with bad mini turbo in that group.

and avoiding blue shell is not to hard... I just keep glancing at the place list while in first if i see some one pick up a blue shell i slam on my brakes and let 2nd place past me... if im to far ahead i time it so i can run off the board while getting hit so that i can make up for lost speed with a recovery mini turbo when laktu drops me back on the course. I have actually seen quite a few people use these to avoid blue shells.

With the 3ds it will probably require a full hack to do anything special as far as the memory goes if what has been mentioned thus far is anything to go by. This said on the DS it would certainly have been possible to inject something into memory via hardware (would be an impressive feat to reverse engineer the game memory layout mind you) and if you managed to figure out how to write memory with external hardware you could have bypassed waiting for datel (irrelevant save dumping/editing tools aside I believe project dipstar beat Datel to the punch). I am not sure if the 3ds does have encrypted memory but given memory dumps have not really been discussed yet (the DSi got a bunch of very nice pictures of the hardware doing it there when it happened) I doubt that your opponent rigged up something for it.

Re: data as it goes out over the internet. Many hacks have used such techniques (although real time hacking like this is quite a demanding task, especially for an as yet unknown piece of software) and there are things like lag switches (send the ping through the roof and ping negation software can make interesting things happen) although I have not heard of this happening for the 3ds (some people toyed with it for the 360). The main problem though is that to alter data in real time then chances are things are encrypted which means you need to know the keys (unlikely) or for the data itself to be unencrypted; possible but secure data has been the de facto standard for a while now although I would be surprised if there are server side checks and serious calculations for this beyond maybe a few metrics.

As was mentioned a combination of some skills and glitches go an awful long way. Moreover if you have a decent lead the competition for second can be quite intense which tends to tank the average speed for those in the situation leading to a bigger gap (especially on a game like Mario Kart .

Last but not least is infinite star power (this also happens in mkwii :yaywii: ). I will NOT tell the tricks because of the cheaters  so find it yourself :teach:

I wondered the same last week. I was in a group with a friend and 6 other JPN guy and one was always invicible (Star) and kept following me during the whole race, hitting me and slowing me down. It happen multiple time with the same guy. I raged quit after the fifth race because of this.

Well is depends on the level, in Koopa City I pown everyone in every way I can.

I win while others have one lap left.

That;s the only explanation OR there are other glitches in the game ^^

I wish there was a cheat device or trainer for some games. Cheating online though is disgraceful. You can always be sure that even though some glitches or exploits get patched, more will most likely always be found.
If someone's cheating, the best you can do is quit and try to find a match without cheaters.
