Has anyone who has purchased a 3DS XL with trade in today in Australia been able to do a system transfer in-store before taking home their new XL? If so what store allowed you to do this and were they okay with it?

I would either call the store ahead of time before you go and ask about it, or ask them when you go to make your purchase. Explain to them that you have games you purchased on the e-shop and that you don't want to lose them. Some may be kind enough to let you do a transfer in store. Just remember the wifi connection must be secure and not drop or else you will lose everything.

i once asked a nintendo representative how to get the coins for my dsi-ware purchases. they told me that they could associate my dsi xl with my purchases if i only downloaded the most recent firmware, so that i could access the dsi-ware shop. i'm assuming they would also be able to associate your 3ds so that you can download your purchases to a new machine. so if the store won't let you do a transfer, call nintendo and see what they have to say.

A 3DS System Tranfer requires an internet connection I believe and it takes some time (20 minutes maybe? I let mine sit for a bit) so make sure it is cool with them if you go that route.

Today I got the Blue 3DS XL but returned it 2 hours later as I dont want to delete everything from my 3DS and dont want to buy everything again.
If I can just upgrade then enter the shop and download everything then I will go buy another but if I cant then I'm not going to waste my money.
What I'm getting at is CAN I get a new 3DS XL and log into the 3DS Shop and download everything I already have on my current 3DS or wont it allow me to do that?

there is a 3ds transfer app that works just that way. you upgrade on both systems and then you can transfer your 3ds dsi-ware and eshop games (including the ambassador stuff) to the new system. they let you do this a total of 5 times, from system to system. so you can move your whole collection to 4 other systems before the transfer app will block you. once you move the collection the original system is formatted and the apps/games are off that system for good.

the transfer app is the only way to do it, you can't log into the eshop and download stuff because the eshop doesn't have accounts. its associated with your system not your username.

Thats where Nintendo products fail. I DONT want to format my 3DS I want to keep it exactly how it is.
So I'm NOT going to waste my money getting the XL. I'm now glad I took it back.
If I could link the 2 devices to the 1 account then I would've gotten one but as its 1 account linked to 1 console then there is NO way I will be getting a 2nd one.
It was for me and my daughter but I guess we will have to just play the Vita when the other is playing the 3DS.

In the end its Nintendos loss. They limit it so they are limiting their sales.

And as I already have the circle pad pro I cant upgrade to the XL anyway. And as its missing the 2nd analog stick and extra buttons the 3DS will still be the desired device.
If you've ever played a game that uses the 2nd analog stick you wonder why Nintendo didn't have it on the XL as there is enough room for it. It'll now look pretty stupid having a circle pad pro xl as it'll be huge.
