Vita's AT&T Pricing Changed

AT&T has changed its 3G data plans for the PlayStation Vita, according to the Vita AT&T listing, to one $15, 250MB plan and one $30, 3GB plan.

Previously AT&T announced a $25, 2GB plan instead of the 3GB one, but it seems that wasn't enough of a jump between consumer bases. As there are 1,024 megabytes per gigabyte, paying double for about 12 times the data space doesn't seem like such a bum deal.

It's not like it really matters - you're not tied to AT&T in any way, the Vita comes Sim Unlocked, you can jam in just about any card from any provider. I'm not entirely sure why people put so much focus on AT&T - fair play they are official partners, but there are alternatives.

I mean $360/ year for internet access outside my home (and a token free download)? You could buy a new Vita every year plus a game for that money.

And don't get me started on the 250MB plan, $180/ year to basically check email. Even light surfing would be almost impossible with that data limit. Lol.

I actually ate one of those today, damn it was delicious.

But I don't see the 3G as entirely useful on the Vita. If they advertised "online gaming anywhere" with like 4G or something then I'd be impressed. But the 3G is rather limited to basically just browsing the web (slowly), small downloads, and basic functions of the PSN (messaging, updating trophies, etc).

IMHO, those are all things that would be better done on a smartphone. Of course, that is an extra expense, but you could probably get a $30 a month contract with a free phone (I don't live in the US, so I don't know how much contracts and such are, but someone mentioned these data plans apply to phones too - I guess by the time you factor in calls and texts if you need both, or one or the other, you could probably get a plan with a bit less data for the same sort of price), making it no more than going for the 3G Vita. Plus if you get a decent phone, you could tether a WiFi Vita to it anyway.

It doesnt require a contract, so does that mean you can pay for it through PSN? That'd be the only way i'd consider buying it at all (Seeing as i always end up with abundance in PSN credit)

Are you certain about that? I thought otherwise, and I know for a fact it's locked in Japan to w/e carrier they're using over there.

Unless on average you would use between 160MB-2GB of data. Obviously the lower plan won't cover your general usage and the 3gb one is overkill and costs $5 more - $60 a year per person who falls under this category goes to filthy rich greedy people.

I beg to differ, 4G is available where I live from numerous providers already (Well, LTE is. The "definite" 4G standard isn't set yet).

Are you certain about that? I thought otherwise, and I know for a fact it's locked in Japan to w/e carrier they're using over there.

Oh yeah, you seem to be right. I was thinking about European Vita's.

The Japanese version is locked to NTT DoCoMo's network, but the Hong Kong variant may not be. What's more, we're fully expecting the AT&T-exclusive US 3G variant to be locked to the carrier come February, but Sony's publicly stated that the European model (which comes with a Vodafone SIM) will not be locked to a particular network.

I assume that a Sim Unlock will be available sooner or later, in fact, I've read that Sony may be preparing one via a system update come the end of the contracts.
