Whatever you do, stay away from crappy R4 clones, there are a few exceptions, though, I can't remember the names but I do know that the ones mentioned in your post are shitty. Now as to what you should get, the usual recs are the Supercard DSTwo and the Acekard2i.

Stay far away from R4.

Get either an AceKard 2i or Supercard DSTWO. Or Cyclo DS iEvolution if you want to be able to use the cameras.

Acekard 2i is good for a beginner if you don't want to spend a lot of money. It was my first flash cart and I never had any problems. But if you're willing to spend a little more then go for the DStwo. I wouldn't recommend R4's.

Thanks everyone! I have seen a lot of posts about the R4 on here and assumed they were good.. haha. Also where's the best site to purchase one? I am in the US.

The difference between the two cards you listed are 1) price and 2) The R4i RTS has a real time save function, meaning you can save anywhere, anytime. Those cards are not bad but the www.r4ids.cn card is much better. They make the R4i Gold 3DS and owning one I can tell you it's a great card...and super easy to use also. Take note, pretty much everyone in this community beats up on R4 and R4i cards, myself excluded. There is a link to reviews of quite a few good flash cards on the home page of this website, go check them out. Make an informed decision; don't rely on fanboyism. Go read up and ask some questions and then you will have your answer. In the process you'll learn some cool stuff. :D

For fast delivery and real cards go here.

For price savings go here.

Let me just tell you that both of those r4 carts aren't what you want. Do not get them. Here are some candidates from me:
  • r4i gold 3ds (make sure it's the one from r4ids.cn): has great compatibility thanks to wood r4 firmware, and can run on every dsi/3ds firmware so far. Fairly cheap ($15 or so).
  • acekard 2i (from acekard.com): has great compatibility thanks to akaio firmware, and can run on every dsi/3ds firmware so far. Fairly cheap as well ($15 or so). Has had some bad reputation, due to crappy springs and severe contact issues.
  • SuperCard DSTwo: Still supported by the official team (although I've heard they are slacking off lately...?), and has great compatibility to games. Can run on every dsi/3ds firmware. Has loads of additional functions (special homebrews, real-time-save/guide, native gba emulator, etc.), but costs a lot more compared to others (can range from $35~$50 depending on where you buy it from).
If I were to recommend one of them, I'd recommend the r4i gold 3ds (but do make sure it's from the website above). I've had my ak2i forever and love it, but I've been bothered by the hardware malfunctions that people keep having problems on (I've fortunately never had any problems on mine). The DS2 is for people who want more than loading homebrews/roms.

all 3 of them has a cheating function, but you can only turn cheats on/off in-game on the ds2. For the other two (ak2i and r4i gold 3ds), you need to chose your cheats, then load the game for the cheats to be activated/deactivated.

I hope your 3DS isn't on 3.0.0.6 Firmware already because every card we mentioned except the Supercard DSTwo will need to be updated on a DS/DS Lite/DSi/3DS that has firmware below 3.0.0.6. Obviously the non 3DS units just mentioned don't have 3.0.0.6 firmware capability, so ideally it would be in your favor if you owned one, or knew someone who did. The one anamoly is the Supercard DSTwo which can update on a firmware that is isn't compatible with already, but it's a quite strange update process.

One option is to write an e-mail to the website shop and make sure to get a response, very important, saying that they will update the card for you.

I agree on that, but it isn't that difficult to update a ds2 on a 3ds fw that the ds2 can't run on:

1) rename the updater
2) pop it into the 3ds (the update process should be running, although the error screen will be shown the whole time)
3) wait for a while

That's basically it, really. The only thing that makes people nervous is that the error screen is still displayed, and that you don't really know how long you have to wait.

Since that's the christmas special one, I'm pretty sure it's already factory-updated to the latest. But might not be the case, so emailing is definitely smart. The latest kernel is wood r4 v1.42
