Hey guys.

Basically, I've preordered Limited Edition of Skyward Sword and funnily this will be the first genuine Wii game I've bought in years. I think the last genuine Wii game I bought was Mario Kart Wii.

I got my Wii on launch day and a year or two after, I modded it by installing cIOS, Homebrew Manager, Neogamma etc.

Now, I'm not sure if I've heard correctly, but Wii game discs come with a mandatory Firmware update and I haven't updated my Wii's firmware in years. If I simply update the Wii's fw to the latest version, will my modded stuff remain like cIOS, Homebrew Manager, Neogamma etc. Or do I need to re-mod my Wii?

Thanks.

Some system updates implement methods of blocking homebrew, mods and whatnot. "Block Updates" will prevent Online and Disc system menu updates from being downloaded or applied. Just follow the virgin install wizard on Modmii and you'll be set.

So you mean, I don't even need to update Wii System Menu and still run newer genuine games smoothly if I simply apply "Block Updates?"

Err, I think I made this a bit confusing. What I meant by "block updates" was a Priiloader hack that blocked the official updates. But I believe that the IOSes themselves are also modified in a way that prevents them from being overwritten via an official update (something with the revision number). As long the individual IOSes or proper cIOSes are installed, then yes. The system menu doesn't need to be the latest to play games (although it's recommended to be on at least 4.0 for the SD Menu, or 4.1 to fix an error with Wii Sports Resort).

Modmii will download all of the essentials for your Wii, but will only update the system menu if you choose to upgrade or downgrade.

EDIT: Actually, if your Wii is 4.0 or lower, and you're following the standard wizard, it'll update your Wii to 4.1 at the mininum.

Ever since I installed a cios the disc channel started asking me to update when trying to play newer games (like DKCR) again, even though I updated all the way up to 4.3 legitimately. So you think Mod Mii will fix this problem and will leave my cios (which is to play GC backups via Neo Gamma) intact? I've been afraid of updating it ever since I got that cios in fear of a brick. I planned to just play Skyward Sword via Gecko OS.

Undoubtedly. It should update your cIOSes to the latest stable cIOSd2x release, which is the most compatible cIOS to date. Also, an updated system menu won't prevent official updates. If any of your main IOSes our outdated, it will try to update.

Modmii will update your Wii with all necessary IOSes and cIOSes, and methods of blocking updates as well as brick protection. If you follow the virgin/re-hack wizard, you'll only brick if you honestly do something really stupid.

So I'm still confused as to what exactly you mean by block updates. I hear Kirby Return to Dream Land includes an update even though we're still on 4.3, which means SS will probably come with an update as well. So if I follow this installer, when the time comes to play SS, will that update be blocked?

The updates included on those discs will basically try to install the latest "official" software, and attempt to overwrite your previous IOSes and remove your cIOSes. Earlier I mentioned Priiloader. This is a brick protection app that is loaded before the system menu and allows you to autoload another app or boot directly to the Homebrew Channel. It has a feature that, using a supplied hacks.ini file, allows you to turn on certain hacks, such as "no system menu music" or "Move Disc Channel". Two hacks supplied with the one from Modmii are "Block Online Updates" and "Block Disc Updates". These are self-explanatory and are your solution to stopping the updates.

Thanks a lot demonicstrife. I've just finished updating using ModMii. Hopefully, when my copy of Skyward Sword arrives, there should be no problem. :)

I can verify that "Block Disc Updates" + d2x cIOS v6 or v7 (IOS 249 base 56) = Successful and safe Skyward Sword playing!

Hey all!

I too have had my wii since launch day and it has been modded. I'm anxiously awaiting my copy of Skyward Sword and I want to make sure my Wii is as ready as possible.
The problem is that I've been out of the loop for so long now I don't know whats happening anymore lol.

Here is the current state of my wii (as best as I can remember):

-System Menu 3.2U
-Boot Mii installed as boot2
-cIOSX_rev20b or cIOSX_rev19 (can't remember which I have)
-cIOS_222 (Hermes??)
-Homebrew channel and USB Loader GX

Should I update my wii? From what I can remember, 3.2U was the best for modding. Has this changed?
I've also never used motion plus before. I dunno if there's any extra steps for getting this to work with my wii.
The last games I played were DKC Returns and Metroid Other M just to give you guys a time frame.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

songwar, you will need to install all the WADs in a pack called "FIX94 d2x v7a5 WAD Pack.rar" The new Kirby and Skyward Zelda are known to require a CIOS with d2x in the title.

Getting on a newer firmware isn't so bad and not hard to hack, but the only real advantage is loading WiiWare and Virtual Console titles from the SD card.

You want to use the latest official release (version 6), not that alpha version that is spread across the internet.

d2x v6 will work, but the WiiFlow Wiki recommends d2x v7b1. It's working well for me, and you can always go back if something doesn't work the way it should.
