How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

It doesn't take a genius to understand that, the person using AI is willingly doing exactly that, "stealing" from all the data it was trained on, most of the time without permission, and no being "open source" is not a justification for that.
Claiming the chatbot doesn't know what theft is but using it regardless and also not disclosing it to anyone is the issue most people have with it.

The "haters" are totally in the right for being upset if they have their own lifetime work stolen then regurgitated into a sludge of a project, and even AI assistance could be enough to gain bad reputation, speeding up coding is great for sure, but the way it gets to "create" the solutions are unfortunately nothing that came from the void, someone somewhere did create that line of code, and that's where the issue lies to.

Artists are even more in the right for being upset because the way LLMs generate texts and also images/music/videos all come from content from everywhere, and it was proven to be straight up stolen from everywhere, without crediting, compensating or attributing the generated data to anyone in particular, because all that is being generated from that is a mismash of everything, and sure it is impressive sometime, it's simply disappointing how it is going.

So yeah, if there is people fan of the "AI" generation, good for them, but they should be aware of how immoral they are in doing all their pet projects in the sandbox filled with all the stuff plagiarised from everything, even moreso when they don't disclose any of it and claim it was made by themselves only -- you know, just like what plagiarising and tracing from con artists has been since forever.

That being said, of course I am all for disclosure about its usage, it's a risk a person was willing to take, and they should accept the backlash from it, lying about it and being found to be a fraud later would only make it much worse on the long run.

As for myself, I am not at all a fan of using "AI" simply for the fact that it's an insult to fellow artists, and yes, programmers too. Programming is a form of art, and it's incredibly upsetting how much slop is being released these days, and it's worrysome that someone thinks it's perfectly normal and should be accepted without taking all the problems that come with it in consideration.

The day AI truly becomes a sentient form of intelligence, and isn't relying on gigantic amounts of "borrowed" data to provide answers to problems will be the day I will personally embrace the technology.
As of right now? Nope, the bruteforced overgrown Markov Chain is not really doing it for me, as much as sometime I have seen genuinely impressive shit from it, it is still garbage at the end point, which is very sad to think about.

so the answer to this question that you cannot maturely answer is yes. thats the answer. fraud does happen. now, if fruad happens. is it reasonable to assume that if the fraudster knows he's committing fraud will do anything by any means necessary to prevent himself from getting caught? well, you don't wanna get caught don't ya right? so, the logical answer is yes. they will no doubt try to do something to keep themselves out of jail. so, with this comparison in mind.

is it reasonable to assume that maybe just maybe that someone out there maybe one small fraction of the population of anti ai haters is crazy enough to send death threads to developers if they disclosed ai usage? the answer is yes. because we are human and we are monsters. we have to accept the evil nature within ourselves.
You aren’t actually saying anything here. There will always be nut cases. You are the case in point currently. You do not get to steal just because some people hurt your fucking feelings. Grow up.

I am shit posting obviously but you know what you cant blame AI bros for feeling that way if you think about it we're all tired.

What’s so truly hilarious about this situation is how no actual developer has any problems disclosing their AI usage. The only people that are impacted by the very idea of disclosing it are script kiddies and knowing bad actors.

Yes, just as long as it is mentioned that Ai was used, I'm ok with it.
Ai has been in games for many years already technically, NPC's are essentially Ai to some form.
Every software company will be using AI, with no exceptions, very soon, if they aren't already. If you're the boss and you're anti-AI, you won't be the boss for long. It's like bringing a knife to a gunfight—it’s simply not a sound strategy.

The disruption is real. Many are saying it’s faster and more furious than all the other disruptions caused by humans that came before it. Nobody is exempt from it, no matter what you do for a living.

so why arn't you thanking them? do you thank them then? because if they have no problem disclosing it you should be a lot less entitled and be grateful that they are doing it for your sakes. I would say a thank you to these devs is in order instead of demanding more.

You have truly no clue what you’re talking about here. You’re so far out of your depth you’re drowning.

Nobody discloses that they use a spell checker. Going forward, nobody is going to disclose whether their text has been tidied up by AI or mostly generated by AI. AI use is already so pervasive that my neighbor's grandmother is using it.

I have actual friends in real life who do this shit for a living. This isn’t hypothetical to the people who get out of their mom’s basement.
you didn't answer my question do you thank them? its easy to thank your friends but how about the "stranger" devs?

Again this isn’t true on any actual level, just nonsense parroted by people who don’t actually know what’s happening outside of headlines.

this is an ego problem two dicks measuring up to two big dicks with a giant ass ego thats the issue. its also a pride problem. pride comes when you have an issue with admitting to fault a failure to look in the mirror.

You mean you know my neighbor's grandmother is not using AI? Who is the neighbor to my neighbor, you or me?

I am not surprised that many people are anti-AI. If I could vote for no AI for everyone, I’m not certain how I would vote. But there is no such option. I would vote for no guns for everyone, and I know I would vote yes, but that is not up for voting.

There’s also a very wide range of AI usage and it’s always clear who is or isn’t arguing in bad faith because the bad faith folks will always change the scope of the AI usage to fit their narrative while ignoring the *ACTUAL TOPIC OF WHATEVER THE DISCUSSION WAS*

bad faith you refused to answer my question when I asked does fraud occur.
