How we cover AI-assisted projects - GBAtemp community check-in

GBAtemp Banner.png

It’s about that time of year again where I check in with the community to see if we can get the front page aligned with what people are interested in knowing and what people are interested in talking about. As the title might have given away, there’s one topic more hot than most at the moment, and that’s AI.

I am a C++ developer by trade, and my place of employ has just started to roll out Claude licences for those interested, so the topic of AI assisted programming is very much on my mind. I’m not just going to go out there and say “AI bad”. I don’t necessarily think it’s a productive conversation to have. The reality is that we’re going to see more projects that make use of it in some form, and some are likely to warrant attention.

Going forwards, I think it’s important that we highlight when projects we do feature make use of AI, and to what extent if such information is available. My hope is that this will strike a reasonable balance of being able to share projects that might look interesting, and giving people who want to avoid AI related projects a simple indicator.

Obviously not every project is going to be so open with their usage, and we have no intention of starting witch hunts by deep diving code and looking for em dashes in the comments. The aim here is to make whatever public information there is accessible for people reading here, and just make things a touch clearer for the people who are looking for that kind of disclaimer.

With that aside though, I am interested to know what the general consensus is among the user base. Are you open to playing ports assisted by AI if it’s the only port available, or happens to offer something unique? Do you draw the line at vibe coding, or do you avoid any project that has Claude listed as a contributor? We sadly don’t have access to polls on the front page any more, but I will make sure to keep up with any replies as they come in.

Harassed? By disclosing AI usage? It's the bare minimum my friend.

I am one of those silent people. I have this account for more than 10 years, and even though I don't post very much, this website is very precious to me. I came here on this thread to make my stand because people like me that really don't like generative AI exist in this community and we should be vocal about it if possible.

If someone wants to use generative AI for their projects, go ahead. But the bare minimum is to disclose the AI usage. It's honestly baffling to me that someone thinks that AI disclosure is a kind of harassment. Disclosure is actually respecting other people's ability to choose what they want to consume. And I, as well as many other people out there, don't want to consume generative AI content.
no that is not the bare minimum my good sir. if they disclose it you should simply be grateful they do and thank them for it. rather then being an entitled prick and demanding that they are forced to do it. how would you like to be forced to live in a world where they made a law from now on all restaurants have to be inclusive to smokers! and smokers can smoke inside the restaurant

based actually.

So much this.

Most of the "vibe coders" are taking hours out of their own lives to build and share things for you for free.

They're just trying to share something cool or help out the community, and instead of a simple 'thanks,' they have to deal with people demanding transparency audits and acting like they owe the internet a full disclosure report.

It's wild.

I think transparency would be the optimal strategy for AI users, in the long run.

Be so transparent that it separates truth from fiction regarding AI, thereby discrediting the toxic segment of critics.

So where exactly does “disclosure” end and the public shaming begin?

Because throughout this thread, people aren't merely saying “I'd like to know.” They're openly saying AI-assisted projects shouldn't be given space, shouldn't be covered, and shouldn't be supported.

At that point, demanding that every hobbyist wear an "AI USED HERE" badge isn't just about informed choice anymore. You're creating a convenient label so people can blacklist, dogpile, and morally judge developers based on the tools they used rather than the quality of what they actually made.

Call it disclosure if you want. When the stated purpose is to identify which projects deserve to be avoided, condemned, or excluded, it starts looking an awful lot like a witch hunt.
I will morally judge anyone who doesn't care about the effects AI datacenters are having on the community. And no, they aren't developers.

Fuck those people.

exactly the disclosure creates a list and different people are going to use that knowledge differently. but we have to be concerned with how the immature and irrational beings are going to wield this disclosure. which is why I proclaim that we have shown as people that we do not deserve this disclosure and that is why I call it a privilege. it was a privilege granted to us due to popular demand. and due to the social environment created by anti ai people they created "permission structures" to abuse and go after these devs. thats bad behavior and that is something I am confident most of these guys won't admit too. so, we have to call it out and remind em. and call it an abused privilege because it now is! so, instead we take it away until we can rightfully say humans deserve to have it again.

Add an AI tag and allow the dev to remove hate filled responses.

Report in the projects on the front page if they are worthy of mention (I'm sick of the pokemon romhack reporting!)

As for me, my work revolves around AI, but despite it being integral to my work, I still have a lot to do.

I see AI shifting the gears of productivity up, as I used AI in a facet of my work, and I felk like I was using a cheat code.

All of a sudden my agenda was clear for that afternoon!

If you have the right of choice and free will to use a tool that is morally biased and hurtful to a lot of people, people should also be entitled to morally judge you for it if they want to. It goes both ways, you don't get to do whatever you want disregarding real life consequences. Every time anyone uses generative AI they are actively hurting people out there, and this is not open for debate, it's a fact.

no see the hate filled comments shouldn't be posted to begin with. the AI tag is the insentive to post hate on them for using AI. Just don't disclose it its that simple. then they won't be able to post hate comments and devs can go about their business.

you don't get to decide what tool is morally right to use. that is not for you to decide or anyone here. that is up to the individual. and the very idea of deciding whether a tool is morally correct or not IS THE JUSTIFICATION TO HARASS DEVS! That's what it comes down too.

I don't think that's the case, you're generalizing in a weird way just putting the words that are in your mind in other people's mouths.

I think transparency is the bare minimum, otherwise you're trying to deceive your audience by hiding information; that on it's own (not the use of AI) is a matter of concern... Like deceiving somebody regarding if the food contains meat or not, don't deceive let the customer decide.

I am fine with AI assisted code, but I would like to know how is the code tested and reviewed, mostly to get a sort of relief that the developer is not an amateur just swinging it without a clue about what they are doing.

I mean it’s not like any other developers before this AI craze have dedicated their whole lives to the craft , helping with foundational tools for multiple systems, only to be called frauds by people with ROM libraries in the hundreds just because they didn’t deliver on one singular project because it stopped being fun once they realized they can’t win with drive-by sparklers who haven’t donated a dime, right?

…right?

True, the comments shouldn't be posted, but the temp is permissive enough with some forms of (what I consider) abuse.
A guy created a tool for the Switch for changing the color curves of the display.

Holy hell some people who responded there need to take a few chill pills.

I respect the demeanor of the OP in the thread. He was attacked by people but took it in an adult manner.

I just don't like the idea of an AI tag people will abuse it. main concern is very valid. is what it is. I'd rather just not reward or encourage toxic behavior.

What's moral is decided by society and communities and that's the very point of this thread.

if humanity were in charge of our own morals we'd blow ourselves up with nukes along time ago.

our morals was given to us by a higher power. then we just simply colonized the world and built on what was given to us then a lot of old knowledge was lost over time which is why morals change but no I dont think society decides our own morals.
