The end has come for the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita. After supporting the PSN Store on the PS3 and PS Vita since 2006 and 2011 respectively, Sony has announced that they plan to shut down digital purchases soon. This August, both systems will lose access to the PS Store in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua. By the end of the year, support for the Middle East and Latin America will follow suit. All other regions will see the PS Store shut down in July 2027, ending the ability to purchase new games digitally on either platform. Games already purchased prior to the shutdown dates on either system will still be able to be re-downloaded, at the very least, for the foreseeable future.

But this was to be expected. The Ps3 is 20 years old, its a retro console. Its quite amazing they kept the service running for so long, bearing in mind this is $ony we are talking about.

In my opinion, I don't think it will affect the way it work but not every content is truly available when using PKGi right now so I'm sure some content might be lost permanently after the shutdown if not kept aside before too late ...

If you haven't purchased your games for these long-dead consoles by now, you weren't going to. Stop the incessant whining. The Wii shop ended in 2014 and Xbox 360 in 2024. Sony should be commended for keeping it open as long as they did. And aren't you whiners the same ones who are whining about Sony ending physical media? So you refuse to buy digitally, but you are outraged that the digital-only shop for a pair of long-dead consoles are closing? What ignorant hypocrites you are!

Hopefully online services aren't going down that soon, I'm not aware of any complete PSN replacements for PS3 and Vita... but credit where credit is due, that's a long life for largely abandoned hardware.

I find it curious that in the span of only a few days Sony has managed to:

1. Removed over 500 digitally purchased movies.
2. Announced they will shut down the store for the PS3 and Vita.
3. Announced they will stop with physical games.

The message is clear: If you buy digitally you will own nothing. And from now on that will be your only option... it would seem.*
