Pokemon Champions gets new overview trailer, launches April 8th

After it was previously announced that it would launch sometime in April, Pokemon Champions has had a new trailer looking at the game's systems and features. In the trailer we get a more in-depth look at how Pokemon are both acquired and trained, and how Victory Points are used in the game. We also see the abilities for Mega Meganium, Feraligatr, and Emboar for the first time, with Meganium and Feraligatr getting abilities that are new to the series in Mega Sol and Dragonize. Mega Sol will allow Mega Meganium to use moves as though Sunny Day is in effect, while Dragonize will change Normal-typed moves to Dragon type and boost their power by 20%. For fans of ROM hacks, both of these may sound familiar, with Chloroplast and Draconize from Elite Redux largely sharing these effects.

The game's release date was formally announced at the end of the trailer, with it set to launch on the 8th of April alongside a paid Starter Pack. This Starter Pack will offer increased box space, a trainer battle theme from the Let's Go games, 30 Teammate Tickets, and 50 Training Tickets. On the subsequent news post on the Pokemon website, it was also confirmed that the Switch 2 version will feature enhanced graphics.

Another NSO Exclusive and that's how they get you to pay for it.

These Online-Only (+ paid subscription) games will eventually die because there's no offline mode.

Nintendo just copying what others are doing.

You inspire me to post news.
I've made a game out of seeing if I can beat that guy to a Pokemon-related news thread. I'm losing. Badly.

I think most of your critiques are fair, regardless of whether I agree with them or not. To this specific point though, I would stress that having this tacked onto an existing game (LZA or SV) would have sort of defeated the point of it. The idea was to have it be an independent platform for VGC so that TPC/Game freak/ILCA don't have to create a new framework for competitive play every time a new game releases. In theory it also makes room for more depth in matchmaking, ranking, events, etc. that just can't be accomplished in the development timeline for a mainline game. Discussions of whether competitive play belongs on cartridge vs. Showdown aside, there's real reason for this to be a part of the ecosystem for Play! Pokemon participants.

Where was it announced that it requires Nintendo Switch Online? I've not seen anything saying so. Typically free to play games wouldn't need it. Pokemon Unite certainly doesn't, so I'd be shocked if this did.

What do they mean 'free to start' ?
I hope they don't implement freemium BS like, oh you can't do any more than X battles, if you don't spend our currency.
Maybe it's just the fact that you need one of the base games to properly play it.

Free to start is what they call all of their recent free to play titles, since they have purchases within. Pokemon TCG Pocket has the same moniker, though interestingly Pokemon Go does not. I wonder if it's something they moved towards in the years after Go's release.

Was Pokopia enough to you? Well, too bad, cuz there's ANOTHER FUCKING POKEMON GAME COMING UP!
This is the official battle simulator people have been asking for for years. Calm the hell down.

This game is also coming to mobile, so it's not exclusive to Nintendo Switch Online and probably won't even require a subscription. It's been known it's coming to mobile since the first announcement.

You don't need a subscription, but it's been confirmed there will be a battle pass kinda thing. I don't think we've had a lot of information on what'll be on it yet though.

Ok... But where is the mobile version? I don't really care about the Switch version.
Coming later this year apparently. Weird for them to stagger it so much when this whole thing was announced a year ago, but I guess it’s better than a broken mobile port… Now if the mobile port is broken at launch even after all this waiting……

It's all worded and in the fine print - like they say the devil is in the details! Nothing is ever truly free with Nintendo, especially when it requires ad constant internet connection.

Wasn't this the official alternative to Pokemon Showdown that they were announcing? I quite forgotten about this entry of Pokemon, actually. I don't know if I'm going to get this especially since I don't get to have all my pokemon on there and only what's allowed on there compared to Showdown, but I'm curious to know how the Pokemon Editorial Team members think of this one once it releases.

I am not one to make negative remarks on Nintendo games coming up since I just find it unnessasary unless it's actually poor. I mean, who even doesn't use Switch Online nowadays? Genuiely wondering this
