My favorite is when people use AI to upscale things (an attempt to add detail that isn't there) or interpolate frames in animation/video content and it just looks completely awful every time.

What do you learn from AI that thousands of other human resources can do better? The system can make mistakes and give you the wrong advice. Just last week it mistook a bag of Doritos for a gun at a school detection machine

In case you are not aware, machines make less mistake than humans.
You make a machine to do one task, it does the task. If there is a problem, the problem gets fixed on all other machines.

Same goes for self-driving vehicules. If it causes one death because of a malfunction, of course, it's tragic, but this malfunction will get fixed in the next update.
On the other hand, there will always be drunk driver who will cause death, no matter how many you put in jail.

They have sources to back up their claims, they do extensive research on the topic, it's some of their JOBS TO GET IT RIGHT. AI just used whatever pops up first in its search engine, which is mostly Reddit. Do you trust Reddit more than an encyclopedia? (outdated source, sure, there's Wikipedia, it works fine too)

Those software bugs can be widespread, ONE single self-driving software flaw can cause many simultaneous crashes across all vehicles under the same brand, or at least a major risk of potentially killing far more people than an individual drunk driver. Fixing an update after many deaths shouldn't be an adequate response, there gotta be stricter measures.
Human drivers are individually accountable and can be removed from the road, but a faulty automated system can remain active until fixed, but what if those patches are delayed? What if they're incompatible with older models?

You could not be more wrong. Some anime are pretty much unwatchable without SVP improving the FPS to me, specially those 3D ones.

As for AI overall, it's a tool. It all depends on how you use it.
AI art could be used as a basis for inspiration or a throwaway design, simple things.
It's great to get a working template, not a finished product.

As for the impact on electricity bills, considering we have a curtailment issue over here, I'd say the problem is not energy generation, but storage and distribution.

I agree with everything you said except for the Frame Interpolation.
While it is true that it might improve the quality in 3D animation, in pure 2D animation, it can worsen it. Since 3D has actual fludity in movement, it's quite easy for AI to guess what frame should be between two other frames. But in pure 2D animation, there are cases where two consecutive frames would make no sense for the AI, and rendering a frame in between those two would make even less sense. Humans can be unprecise sometime, and when drawing a 2D character running across the road, sometime, his leg will be a bit too on the left, sometime, his arm will be a bit too on the right. When the video is playing, you can barely see such animation error, since it's moving fast, and it might last only one frame over one second. But animation studio use duplications for these scenes. And if you add frame interpolation, you will worsen that animation mistake (time 2? Times 4?) And see it for 4 or 5 seconds.

But unlike physical hardware flaws, which are limited by production batches and maintenance cycles, software can be instantly replicated, with just one single line of bad code and it can propagate to millions of systems in seconds through an update.

A mechanical flaw might cause one plane to fail at a time (which lets hope that doesn't happen right now as we speak, poor Kentucky) a software bug in a global, connected fleet can cause thousands of vehicles to malfunction simultaneously.

Dude, Aviation operates under REALLY strict regulations, maintenance, and all kinds of processes that don’t apply to consumer-level systems like self-driving cars or ChatGPT. They all must go through countless tests, fail-safes, and regulatory approval before deployment. The others on the other hand often rely on over-the-air updates with much less oversight.

AND, AT MOST there are about 40,000 aircraft worldwide, compared to the potentially millions of machinery, computers, etc. A system failure in aviation affects relatively few units and is contained quickly, I feel like you're not accounting for scale here

There is a startup in Quebec who is trying to deploy a new technology to decrease that energy consumption from AI center.
Don't ask me all the detail about how it works, but in short, they wanted to use that heat released from these servers to generate energy. Some kind of "energy recycling". The 1000KW consummed from the machines would release heat that could be converted into 100KW of more energy (or something like that) that could be reused by the center itself, as if it had its own powerplant powered by heat.
It was a technology that was already available (or that could already be built) but not efficient/profitable enough to be built anywhere since we had no structure that would produce so much heat.

Yeah, the output isn't good, regardless of algo, which is kind of my point. It's hardly better than just upscaling without using AI then putting a blur on top of the upscaled output hahaha.
There comes a point where just redrawing/painting things at a higher resolution makes more sense.

Interpolation (and AI by extension) looks wrong because we are used to animation following certain principles and fundamentals that make everything feel cohesive and pleasing.

Computers don't know anything about that, they are just following a math equation. Even the "better" AI made animation that someone showcased on this thread about One Punch Man S3 looks very wrong because the timing it's very poorly done.

This is not gaming, more fps are actually detrimental to animation itself, to the point that a lot of animations are done in twos or threes because of a variety of reasons (stylization, timing, easier to do, serves a purpose on the scene, etc).

I don't know about how things work on your country, but at least over here, it's not that simple to get your product out on the streets. There are some severe regulations, specially for cars.

From my (AI-powered) research, the death toll for software flaws is under 500 people, and most of those were.. in a plane crash.
The other being a radioactive device... from the 80s.

All of those are at least 20 years old.

The top 3 plane accidents in the last 10 years have killed more people. (Thanks again, AI).

I'd wager a lot of manual google searches are more resource expensive overall than a single, well made, AI-powered prompt.

As for water usage, that's entirely a matter of how the cooling system works.
There are data centers with near zero water usage after the initial pooling thanks to recycling.

They make a lot of anime more watchable. I concede that it's an opinion, but it's one I generally disagree with.
I can't even watch some anime at 24 FPS anymore, as it looks incredibly jarring.

Interpolation looks very weird and uncanny on live action though, and I wish TVs stopped adding it as a default feature.

Just give SVP a try in recent titles.
I have yet to see anything worse than mild/minor artifacts, which are a more than welcome downside for the increased fluidity, and that's with me setting it to a fixed 120 fps.

Then again, there are people who can't tell 30 fps from 60, so YMMV.

Anyways, that’s because that kind of software hasn’t yet been deployed at a massive, safety-critical basis across daily life, but now it will be with the growing demand and investments, but there's no proper ordinance, we're heading down a risky path where those numbers oughta increase tremendously.

But the market rises with each business wanting their own AI model, being integrated into every app, site, and device, the total energy footprint scales exponentially, not linearly. I mean Minecraft has its own AI, WHY?? What kind of overflated market is this??? His name is Merl ._.

As for water usage, that's entirely a matter of how the cooling system works.

GDPR and such are far from what's actually needed.

I also have yet to envision how an AI software flaw can lead to the death of multiple people.
Maybe just the very ignorant, non intelligent, which shouldn't be using the tool in the first place (hence, the need for more regulation).

Additionally, not all LLMs work the same... Gemini/Google's AI is still usually not half as useful as ChatGPT using models o4 or o5, nor is Copilot, Deepseek etc.

Eventually, people will be running their models locally (some already do, heck, even I could atm, since my current rig is almost top end for gaming), and all this overblown talk about eco-issues will be nonexistant.

Which is why you ask for sources and use your own brain to judge whether what's said has any sense.
There are questions which do not need extra steps, and questions that do.

It's a great tool for "templating", as it's basically trying to output the "most likely" average "knowledge" about a subject.
So, you need an idea for art, a quick text reference on a subject, how to devise simply code skeletons, it's got your back.
If you need a summary, or a summarized research on a specific subject, it's also great, doubly so when trained for that subject.

When there is little known information, or when there is no consensus, you shouldn't trust LLM output at all.
So, opinions, very niche subjects, controversies, fringe science etc.

It's also a curated tool. People can and will point out the mistakes, allowing the tool to improve.
If you ask "how many rocks shall I eat", you won't get trash responses anymore, even from Gemini.

P.S.: If you ask me, honestly, not everyone should be accessing the Internet freely, as they lack the needed capacity to do so.

The same goes for other important things in life, like voting in a democracy: while it achieves the goal of representing everyone, it goes against the goal of being the best outcome for a populace, because, on average, humans are stupid. in a broader sense of the word, as in most of us can't evaluate see mid/long term consequences at all, for many circumstances. Some can't even see how terrible things are gonna be in the next few seconds, or take unnecessary risks all the time.

By extension, I'd like to add emphasis on the way "AI" is marketed. It isn't necessarily people being dumb, it's often that they use it as if they're talking to a person and not ever questioning what it says.

Also, the "AI"-related suicides are less about the victim being dumb and more about emotional disorder. If it speaks like a person and looks like it tries to think like a person, to a depressed teen, it stops making a difference. That definitely shifts the problem to parents to a great degree, but the ultimate problem are the great misconceptions that avid "AI" users make up or are being told by "AI" companies.
