Anbernic RG DS teased, a sub-$100 dual-screen retro handheld

Anbernic is the latest handheld manufacturer to jump on the dual-screen retro handheld hype train. The company teased the Anbernic RG DS, a device that packs a form factor that aligns with the Nintendo DS Lite/3DS.

While specs of the console have not been revealed, is most interesting aspect might be the pricing. The RG DS is set to be priced below $100, making the most affordable dual-screen retro handheld out there. That said, the specs might be inferior to that of the competition to maintain the budget price. We'll likely learn more about the RG DS in the coming weeks.

Yeah, but dual IPS screens bro.
Which the DSi LL has... and they're like $35.

It'd be one thing if this could emulate the 3DS as those can get pretty expensive, but it's unlikely. And you're better off getting a cheap $40-50 single screen Anbernic for everything else.

Yeah, but the prices will be high for them as well even at local pawn shops. I couldn't believe pkmn FR/LG was set at $90 each. If this thing has a built in emulator I might be sold on it. I kinda want to get away from flashcarts. My SuperDSTwo is still amazing, but drains the battery.
Still leagues better than this blatant knock-off.

Where do you guys get a DS for like 5$? I guess in the US.
In germany it is already crazy how much they want for and old used DS. Just some random prizes I found, October 25 for USED consoles off the 2nd hand market from private sellers, no shops (they are even more expensive!) Just "kleinanzeigen"
  • DS: 60-150 Euro
  • DSi XL: 70-150 Euro
  • 3DS: ca. 90-120 Euro
  • 3DS XL: 200 Euro upwards
  • 2DS XL: around 150 Euro

Sooo, if they bring this console for like 100 bucks and it can run almost everything: i still won't buy it but maybe its something for someone.
Can confirm nobody in the US is getting a DS for $5 unless they shot somebody and donated $5 to the family.

if it can play all ds and 3ds games so i can use retroachievements, that's all i need
i will buy this

I'd be interested in purchasing this if:

- Allows upscale of 3D models
- Plays 3DS games at full speed
- Has a screen that allows good integer scaling (GBA/DS/3DS)

I really like my O3DS but this sounds miles better with modern tech (and has the points listed above)

The DS/3DS form factor is still unparrelelled for travel. It's small enough to fit in a pocket, and you don't need a bulky case since the design protects the screens. The Switch and Steam Deck are too bulky, as is a controller+clip for a phone, especially for air travel, and that's before factoring in the even more bulky cases you need to protect them, especially the analog sticks.

I pretty much only use my 3DS when I travel and I've started getting interesting comments about how old it is, even though it doesn't feel old to me. I've got enough games on there to last me forever with how infrequently I use it and it only gets a few dozen hours of use a year, so it might last forever.

Still, it would be nice to have a modern replacement, but I don't think it's this. There is no way this thing can run 3DS games at under $100 in this economy (tariffs, inflation, etc.) and still be sold at a profit.

Crazy prices in Germany, but then again y'all are forced to pay for a stupid TV/Radio License.

It is 100% not playing 3DS at that price. Would you really want to play 3DS on two 4:3 screens either way? Upscaling of DS games and decent integer scaling are a solid possibility though.

You can pick up a Doorstopper 2DS for less than this, but it's not a very good way of playing 3DS games. 😅

If the screen is decent enough I don't mind the borders

This will have/likely have:

Better Screens
USB C charging
Make games look better
Fast forward gaems
A fresh hinge to fuck up
Reasonably priced
Be clean - used to work at British equivalent of gamestop, used DS systems were vile. Maybe British kids were just disgusting.

OG DS is 20 years old. My OG DS lite has been in my life longer than my nearly 17 year old Nephew. Having this as an option is a good thing if you don't want to go through 15 year old hardware.
Came here to say this. Anbernic may crap out a new device every 3 months but they're trying to preserve form factors of your childhood devices without having to source parts and mods from devices built 20 years ago. People don't see that for some reason. When DIY mods are $80+ this is a fair price to relive classics.

This looks so good.
If I didn't already have their RG35XX SP (a great little thing) I would definitely get this. I have a crimson and black DS Lite and I think it's one of the best looking consoles (or devices in general) evar and this is the crimson and black DS Lite but with better screens and better specs and dual analogs. Shut up and take my money. Except I already have a retro emulation handheld so probably not :P

My DS Lite's touch screen is starting to shit the bed, I can calibrate it just fine and it will work accurately for a few minutes, then progressive gets worse and worse. I've been replaying picross and 3d picross and it's maddening when I click on a square and it pops the one 2 squares over.

I have a 3DS XL but it's too clunky for my taste, I love the form factor of the DS lite. So I am a potential customer of one of these.
