> "High taxes, Liberalism, Socialism, Progressivism, Wokeness and DEI included at no additional cost if you buy today!"

Read, the CEO is big mad that he has to actually pay workers, taxes on company profits, and that people don't buy everything overpriced when the competition has it for cheaper every single time.
Typical corpo behavior, nothing new.

That surely implies them having stuff to buy? I've heard they have actually been improving on that front in the USA, but here in Italy, for being primarily an used game store, they don't deal with the most widespread classic consoles (Wii/PS2/DS) and not even with last gen (3DS), no wonder...

The "high taxes" thing doesn't really work here. Sale taxes are not "paid" by the company, they are only collected by them. Emloyees income taxes are usually managed by a third party. As for the taxes on the revenue, both canadian governement (federal and provincial) usually have low taxes on big corporation (especially in the video game industry).

As for their overpriced stuff, from what I've heard, they have this problem everywhere (not just in Canada and France). For example, their used video game are really overpriced, while their acquisition price is way too underpriced. They started to lose that market hard here (and I mean REALLY hard). They rarely ship used game, you have to get to the store if you want to buy one. Instead, people looking for the second hand market, will usually look on other plateform, like Marketplace or kijiji, and meet with the seller in person. They remove the third party seller (gamestop) and save tons of money (on a 80$+tx game, instead of paying 60-70$ for a used one at GameStop, you will easily find them for 40-50$ on Marketplace)

As for other merchendising, such as t-shirt, figurine, accessories, etc., there are other stores that offer such merchs, for a better price and of better quality.
While Gamestop used to be a must for video game merch, today, it's a big must avoid for pretty much everyone I know

I have fond memories of going to its "predecessor," Funco Land. To be honest, when they stopped selling 6th gen games, I stopped going to GameStop.

Since I switched to PC in the late 2000's, my go-to's were Steam, bundles, and digital storefronts, and I had no interest in toys and knickknacks. On top of that, GameStop had several controversies, from the "new games opened and sold as used" issue to the business with the stocks.

I didn't even know they had stores in Canada and France. Also, the Gamestop near me is just full of Funko shit.

They bought a popular branch of gaming stores (Micromania) years ago

Everything in there is also overpriced as hell and you can often find better deals elsewhere

I forgot GameStop was still a thing and yet they can't even refurbish consoles properly.
Is it the same as us in the UK? As in, the market for used consoles/video games just moved to websites like Marketplace or Kijiji.
A video game that would cost 80$+tx here in Canada, you would pay around 60-70$ for a used one at GameStop, but if you buy it directly from someone who posted it on Marketplace, you would pay around 40$.
Gamestop lost all interest to gamer since this.

We don't have GameStop here, but rather GAME. GAME sells new video games as well as pop culture collectibles, computer accessories and VR headsets. In contrast, CeX is where you would go to sell and buy used games.

What's deceiving with CeX is that when you trade in a game or console, you either can get a voucher to use online/in-store or cash. Vouchers have a higher value than trading in for cash. In this example below, 'discounted' used Original Xbox is selling for £60. Now, highlighted in the red circle is how much you will receive. It's such a scam.

I used to buy broken ps4 controllers from ebay, fix them, then sell them at Game Stop for a bit of gas money. You only got like 16-18 bucks (less if the controller had drift). I haven't done that for a while and kinda forgot about them. There's a store in my area called gameXchange that I go to get all of my classics and classic accessories. They fall in the same boat but they have more classic stuff. I sold an original gameboy there (because 2nd n Charles tried to give me 50 cents or something for it). They gave me like 30 bucks. It was probably because I put a backlight with different pallets in it. I haven't been there in a while. That store seems to be popping up all over, come to think of it.

[Edit]
Also what's worse about gameXchange is that they take broken stuff without fully checking it and will NOT give you your money back. They'll give you a code on a receipt that's supposed to be used for in store credit.

I remember them doing something like that back then. Like, when I brought I couple of Gameboy cartridge, the guy at the counter barely looked at them and offered me 20$ or 30$ of in-store value.
I also remember them doing actually good stuff a while ago.
Like when the PS4 got released (not the Pro), they would offer easy way to exchange your PS3 games for PS4 games for only a small extra price (Like The last of us PS4 in exchange for The Last of us PS3 +10$, or something like that)
