How do transfer files larger than 4gb to modded switch

I don't think you ever need to move files larger than 4GB. This is a limit of the FAT32 system, which is the recommended file system for your Switch SD card. Installing any games over USB (even the largest ones) will all work on a FAT32 partition.
but how are you supposed to get these large files onto the switch? I must have asked this question about 50 times over the years and still havent got a clear answer.

The SD is Fat32

When I try to drag and drop it tells me the file is too large to transfer.

I've just tried hekate's USB transfer system and it very clearly will not allow transfers above 4gb. I dont get how people are continually saying they can get larger files this transferred.

You're confusing transferring with installing. DBI for example will install even a 10GB game (NSP, NSZ, XCI) easily to your Switch via USB. You just need to tell it to do it. With the MTP install option, it's just drag and drop, it's that easy.

I haven't confused installing with transferring. I haven't mentioned installing yet, as there's nothing on the Switch to install yet.

I'm talking about drag and dropping (transferring) files from the PC to the Switch.

The 8gb NSP is on my PC.
I try to drag and drop the NSP from my PC to the Switch and it refuses to copy across.

As I've stated in my previous posts;
1) If I try to drag and drop using DBI MTP and nothing happens. There's no progress bar. I've even tried to drag across a small jpeg file just to test if I can drag and drop anything accross and nothing happens

2) When I use Hekate USB to PC, I can drag and drop files but I'm limited to files sized 4gb and under. So an 8gb NSP cannot be transferred from the PC to the Switch using Hekate USB tools

But that's what I was saying. You shouldn't transfer your game files (NSP, NSZ, XCI) to the SD card. You should only install them directly over USB. That's the normal way to do it. If the MTP method doesn't work for you with DBI, there is also the backend method. Take a look at the DBI instructions over here.

I've tried DBI's MTP "SD card install" option as as I've said, nothing happens when I drag and drop.

As far as I'm aware, you can't use DBI to view files and folders that are on your PC so I dont know how else you could install a game directly to the switch. Presumably the only way you'd be able to install using DBI is if it could find the NSP file on your PC and install to the Switch over USB?

The only method I know of is to copy the file across to the Switch using drag and drop but I've already said, drag and dropping ISN'T working for files larger than 4gb

I just wish somebody would give me a straight answer why it is not possible to drag and drop anything above 4gb. I don't get what benefit people are getting keeping this to themselves rather than spending 30 seconds just explaining what they use! It's simply NOT possible to drag and drop files larger than 4gb. I've owned multiple unpatched Switches, some already pre-modded and THEY ALL refuse to accept files above 4gb yet the modders bluff that a modded switch can accept files larger than 4gb. Its fkin BS

Have you tried DBIbackend. It's a small app you run on your PC. Run it, then you browse to your nsp file. On the DBI side on your Switch, you choose the option "Install from DBIbackend". They'll see each other. Then you just install. Less easy than drag and drop, but it also works.

OK whats the best way to find that? I've gone to the downloads page on this forum but theres 41 pages and no way to search throught them to find them. I found a github but surprise surprise there's no download link, its just a bunch of meaningless information.

Secondly, whislt I've been waiting for replies I've installed a small 2gb game using DBI and I'm still getting the same "no ES patch" bs I was getting before I reformatted it all. When I try to launch the game it says "unable to connect to the internet. Please check your settings". Why would it even be trying to connect to the internet? It makes no sense!

I'm just done with this. Its a fking JOKE. Ten more minutes and I'm going to throw it at a fucking wall. Its a FUCKING JOKE!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the link.

syspatch did nothing last time when I was told earlier to install it, so I dont see how thats going to make any difference. It isnt the reason that I cant install files larger than 8gb

But do realize that you won't be able to run anything without sys-patch or sigpatches. Personally, I use sys-patch successfully. And once again, you can't transfer files larger than 4GB because it's a limitation of the FAT32 system. On the other hand, you CAN install games larger than 4GB by USB installation (with DBIbackend, for example). If it works for everyone else, why should it not work for you?

Edit: One thing that people forget often is that you're supposed to reboot your Switch for sys-patch to go in action.

Nobody has mentioned it yet but NSPsplitty is an option. It splits files over 4GB into a folder containing multiple 4GB files which you can copy to a FAT/FAT32 formatted micro SD card. It sets the archive bit in the folder which makes the Switch recognize it as a single file.

https://github.com/Aionmagan/NSPsplitty/releases
That, and any other split options, shouldn't really be used anymore imo. The only time you need files > 4gb is for a game install, which you can use dbi for that. It was useful when in the past, usb installs barely worked and network installing wasn't an option.

I guess you could have a nand backup that needs splitting, but it will already come split when creating a backup using hekate.

I'm not sure what to say to this. You continue to ask for help while passive aggressively attacking the people trying to help you. Perhaps instead of telling us all how we're doing it wrong and terrible helpers you should examine what you're doing and find out what you might be doing wrong.

90% of modded Switch owners use FAT32 cards and I'd wager a large portion of those are using DBI's MTP SD Card Install option to install things. I have used 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB cards all formatted in FAT32 and have installed >30GB games on them using that exact method. If that doesn't work for you, that is the problem you need to solve. You will never copy a file larger than 4GB to a FAT32 formatted storage device whether it's an SD Card, USB Drive, SSD, or other storage device. It is a hard limitation of the FAT32 file system. All of the title installers for the Switch (even Nintendo's native installer) know this and break the > 4GB files into pieces automatically to work around the FAT32 limitation.

Those using exfat are playing with fire and will eventually get burned by corruption.

As I remember... DBi splits files in MTP transfer mode too.

To my understanding, nsps, nszs and every other file type for switch roms are glorified zip/rars
Yes they are archives and when placed on a FAT32 formatted card they must be broken down into ~4GB chunks. You'll see this if you peruse the Nintendo/Contents folder and start going through the games you have installed there.

Before giving up I tried a few things;

1) I hard reset the switch and launched it basically like a normal unpatched switch just to test if the switch would play game cartridges. It wouldn't even recognise games in the card slot (even though it was fine a while ago) So maybe thats why games aren't launching (rather than there being a problem with syspatches etc)

I factory reset the Switch and that seemed to fix the card slot and allow me to play game cartridges.

2) As I'd factory reset the console, I had to reformat the SD card etc and go through all the hekate atmosphere installation again.

Tried to drag and drop NSPs into the 'Install to SD' folder and still no luck

Was about to give up but then thought maybe the filename of the 8gb NSP was too long, which was causing either Windows or the Switch to reject any dragging and dropping. I deleted most of the filename and it's now sucessfully dragged and dropped.

Games are now booting up. At last!

Thanks for putting up with me losing my mind - especially Dust2Dust
