Ryujinx emulator taken down after devs reach agreement with Nintendo

images.png

In what could possibly be the worst way to start October for emulation enthusiasts, as of just a few minutes ago the Ryujinx repository appears to be down, with the usual "404" message being given when trying to enter any of their related GitHub pages. Not even the main Ryujinx developer account seems to be active.

Currently there hasn't been any official reports as to why this occurred. None of the official social media accounts for the emulator have given any response, nor has any of the developers talked about why the repository is down, but we'll be sure to keep you updated whenever any new developments towards this situation are known.

UPDATE #1: Given the nature of the page being down with a 404 message, it's possible that this could be related to the removal of the Ryujinx account, and not a DMCA. If the repository suffered from a DMCA claim, then the DMCA notice would appear when entering the repository. However, that is not the case, and the DMCA listings from GitHub doesn't have any recent entries for Ryujinx.

UPDATE #2: The Ryujinx Discord server has paused invites for the moment, and additionally, one of the Discord mods posted the following message:
"To clarify, it's not a DMCA, it's not an issue with GitHub. Please wait for further information and refrain from spreading misinfo thanks."

UPDATE #3: According to an official statement on Ryujinx's Discord server, developer gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and they were offered an agreement to stop working on the emulator project, and while the agreement wasn't confirmed yet, the organization has been entirely removed.

UPDATE #4: According to other devs, the developer was not only contacted, but actually tracked down by Nintendo to his location, and pressured to developer to cease and abandon development altogether for the emulator.

This marks now the 2nd and only main remaining Switch emulator that Nintendo has taken down as of today, and without any proper and clear protection when it comes to emulation and preservation down the road, it's likely that Nintendo will continue on its efforts to bring down emulation as a whole.

No not at all. Why? B/c we have idiots that would showcase the game using Ryu on Youtube.
exactly.

I don't see how it's their fault if games are leaking

I don't know where this assumption that they got shut down because of EoW working early is coming from. They most likely were already targeting Ryujinx right after they dealt with Yuzu.
While i personally don't think it would make sense for it being their fault for games leaking (because that's simply backwards logic) the vast majority believe it is the fans fault for it leaking because it IS the fans leaking the product.

in regards to your second point...well why can't it be both? think about it, you have both emulators having a game working before launch and it spreads like wildfire, because (PAYWALL AND ROM STASH ASIDE ON YUZU'S PART) both made the same mistake of having a game working on it's respective emulators before launch and that's more problematic than it may seem, as for the other emulators I would not be surprised if the same thing happened simultaneously, or rather it could be something completely different altogether, and this Segways neatly into my final point:

emulators legally have always been a confusing and complex topic, if it's anything I've learned from when the GL happened, we truly don't know what's going on even after the situation is long and over, you could be right and so could i or we could both be wrong, we. don't. know.

It's just not the same era as over a decade or two ago when emulation and the like was a lot more niche and gaming wasn't as big as it is today. There's significantly way more gamers from all spectrums nowadays and social media sites like Twitter and YouTube spreads more awareness of things like emulation and whatnot. As games become bigger and more expensive to develop and produce, the more money companies need to break even or make a profit as much as possible.

Nintendo is quite aware of this and the Switch era alone has given them record profits that surpasses their previous generation of consoles COMBINED.

It's basically just too risky to be developing Switch emulators when the Switch is still alive and actively selling and making bank for Nintendo. And there's no doubt Nintendo will be keeping an eye on any potential future Switch 2 emulators, too.

because the community would have lambasted them if the said they were bought but threat as the joker said in the dark knight thats just part of the program.
So, I'm going to ask again, did Nintendo do a C&D or a buyout, because those are 2 completely different things that ppl are saying,

honesty no clue but unless the developer says what going on we will probably never know for sure since Nintendo will never say

I just think that some of y'all just give too much importance to EoW's leak, or even leaks in general. I also don't understand why we would « blame the fans », that doesn't mean anything. Games are going to leak every time there's an occasion, and games are leaking because their console are easily modded. No one reasonable would think that we should blame the modscene, even tho it's because it exists that there's piracy on the console.

They haven't reacted when Smash Bros released 3 weeks before the official release, neither when ToTK was released, I don't see why it's EoW that would make them react. In fact, even if there were absolutely 0 early leaks, I think they would have had the same reaction. They just don't like that their games are running on PC, it's that simple. And I have no technical knowledge on that subject, but if Yuzu and Ryujinx needed relatively little work to make Switch 2 run, then it seems obvious why Nintendo would shut them down even before they announce the console.

I just don't see why we're talking about leaks, it feels like some just want to find a culprit or someone to blame for this situation. It just happened because their console's hacks are too popular, and they would hate it if the scene wasn't starting from scratch (well, I guess they hope it never starts to begin with), but to blame early leaks is ... a very narrow pretext. It's the fact that the whole scene exists that caused this, but I wouldn't go as far as to blame each one of us.

I legit do not care mate, i speculated it could possibly be about EoW at the end of the day i could be wrong and so could you, i am completely neutral on this as said in my first post i am aware of nintendo's shitty choices but on the other hand i cannot ignore what fans have done as well, however my point still stands when i said: i don't care if you emulate newer gen console's but i expect people to be aware of the potential consequences of spreading it all over socials Eow, Totk or not. so i'm not sure why you're reaching higher than 4'5 middle schooler trying to dunk a basketball, saying we're trying to find a culprit because there is no "we" here like i said, i am disappointed on both sides of the coin.
Have a good day I'm going to go play some FF6

I’m not putting the SOLE blame on GBAtemp. Not at all. But that thread has over 36 thousand views. And it’s linked to and referenced in other places. The reality is that the pirates win when the discussion isn’t shut down. And while a give MAJOR credit to this site for shutting down any links to games, they gotta do better with discussions of leaks. Period. Any conversation that links emulation to piracy should be shut all the way down and that didn’t happen here. They simply didn’t help the situation.
oh i gotcha, my bad i misunderstood

Emulation is legal, as proven multiple times in the past in court.
Pre DMCA & none of those cases involved patents.

Please stop pretending that because something is an emulator then it's always legal.

Oh I totally agree with you @ShadowOne333 But UNLESS someone like the EFF or someone with big pockets try to fight at least one of these companies in court about the current state of emulation. It's kind of dead unless someone smarter than me figures out how to beat the checks in the DMCA.

Like we got Xwine1 now, it's a translation layer and not an emulator. Is that the way forward maybe? No idea how they reply back with the right "Yepp, this is a real system!" kind of way.
As people have repeatedly tried getting DMCA exemptions for games consoles and courts have been very firm on the matter, I think there is zero chance that anyone would put money into it.

Emulators for current generations of consoles are a bad idea, they only harm preservation.

I've been involved in emulation since the 90's.

Pretty much nothing has changed, Nintendo have sued projects over that entire time frame.

I'd say it was stupid for anyone to ever have thought about emulating switch when it was the current generation, but I'm guessing they both have made life changing amounts of money out of it before getting caught.

Two of the developers have said it's a C&D.
How Nintendo managed to enforce this in Brazil, I do not know.
They didn't (not saying that they couldn't if they wanted to do it the "proper way"), it is very likely that they just threatened the guy and he just didn't want to bother going against their request to possible face consequences down the road.

What is C&D?
Cease and Desist. Stop or we'll sue you basically. Like I said, I don't know how Nintendo managed to do this with Brazil's infamously unregulated laws on the matter, but that's what the developers of Ryu have said happened.

The fact that Nintendo was able to make so much profit, despite there being emulators for their current console that simply works better than their out-of-the-box outdated hardware, and said emulators being talked publicity about all over the internet, it should tell that emulators or piracy or whatever simply don't affect Nintendo in the slightest.
Their games keep leaking ahead of time, weeks or even months, yet they still end up top sellers and usually blow away the competition. They could very well ignore everything related to emulators or piracy, yet remain successful and on top of the competition.

You don't make money by letting people steal from you, does everyone forget they're a business, not your friend?
If Nintendo were smart they woulda put the emulator on the site Nintendo site working with the devs... Like In a 3rd party play section no online play use your own risk... This would be for the emulation community as not everyone knows of such things... Charge $50 when you 1st get the software then $10 for each update which would be alot of updates and split it with the devs??? Why not lol Nintendo would make a killing getting money on both ends the actual Hardware and Emulation Software!!! But they don't think like that do they now i mean look at how many downloads Ryujinx and Yuzu had from when the projects started... That would make them alot cash in my opinion and would still be raking it in to this day it's nothing like huge amounts of passive income but they shut em down??? Hell on the subject of games they could sell licesned digital copies at regular eshop prices that only match the emulator you buy like a pairing system... Meaning said emulator would have a software key embedded that would also be embedded in said game you buy linking them... Also the emulator you purchase from Nintendo would also only work on the computer you installed it on... This would mean you got another Pc you gotta buy it again or perhaps a transfer fee idk lol.. But man that would be a dream a company embracing emulation and making a passive income on new or older IP that they wanna go after everybody for...

Of that 20% I quoted, about 60% of it won't run in WINE. I am fully aware of WINE's existence, I used to run Ubuntu in tandem with Windows 10, and am decently familiar with it. I'm also a programmer, and am only really proficient in C# with WinForms. I have written 3 save editors in the past using that setup, 2 of which I am planning on making updates to in the coming months. The projects are for Visual Studio 2017, and I have zero knowledge of QT and other UI frameworks, and would need to learn those, THEN rewrite my save editors from scratch. You literally cannot run Visual Studio on WINE properly, let alone run its build chain. Linux jumping is a no-go without getting the amount of software that cannot run in WINE currently being reduced by 95% at least (so that only 0.6% or less of my usual software won't run in WINE) to make me even consider jumping ship.
ah i see, your projects were BUILT around windows using a proprietary sdk. Yea your pretty much locked into that environment for now.

It doesn't matter how much money they made. All they see is that they could've made even more money if it wasn't for those pesky kids.
