Ryujinx emulator taken down after devs reach agreement with Nintendo

In what could possibly be the worst way to start October for emulation enthusiasts, as of just a few minutes ago the Ryujinx repository appears to be down, with the usual "404" message being given when trying to enter any of their related GitHub pages. Not even the main Ryujinx developer account seems to be active.

Currently there hasn't been any official reports as to why this occurred. None of the official social media accounts for the emulator have given any response, nor has any of the developers talked about why the repository is down, but we'll be sure to keep you updated whenever any new developments towards this situation are known.

UPDATE #1: Given the nature of the page being down with a 404 message, it's possible that this could be related to the removal of the Ryujinx account, and not a DMCA. If the repository suffered from a DMCA claim, then the DMCA notice would appear when entering the repository. However, that is not the case, and the DMCA listings from GitHub doesn't have any recent entries for Ryujinx.

UPDATE #2: The Ryujinx Discord server has paused invites for the moment, and additionally, one of the Discord mods posted the following message:
"To clarify, it's not a DMCA, it's not an issue with GitHub. Please wait for further information and refrain from spreading misinfo thanks."

UPDATE #3: According to an official statement on Ryujinx's Discord server, developer gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and they were offered an agreement to stop working on the emulator project, and while the agreement wasn't confirmed yet, the organization has been entirely removed.

UPDATE #4: According to other devs, the developer was not only contacted, but actually tracked down by Nintendo to his location, and pressured to developer to cease and abandon development altogether for the emulator.

This marks now the 2nd and only main remaining Switch emulator that Nintendo has taken down as of today, and without any proper and clear protection when it comes to emulation and preservation down the road, it's likely that Nintendo will continue on its efforts to bring down emulation as a whole.

Look at the big picture. If it's just the leader they wanted. That means the code is still there and the rest of the gang can continue.
Time will tell. Glad I updated the other day at least. Not that I usually play anything anymore or rarely. I typically used my PC instead of my actual switch (ditched our TV a long time ago) due to diminishing eyesight and general comfort. (Im prob one of the few that do pay for my things, (Im neither young nor poor/broke)

Oh well. Was fun while it lasted and I've been around since the days of Pasofami so this doesn't really surprise me much, other than it took this long.

What I miss most about Yuzu is that async shader, something that Ryujinx doesn't have, and the main dev refused to add. Maybe with forks we will have it on Ryujinx, also some frame generation that Yuzu devs were researching if the community wanted it...

Ryujinx was not taken down by DMCA, so I hope the forks will be fine.

Completely pathetic. I miss the old internet before literally everyone was on it. None of this Sony or Nintendo taking down PCSX or PJ64, it didn't happen & it shouldn't happen today

Flatpak still has Ryujinx if you're a Linux user. Not sure if there will be any forks of Ryujinx after that because Nintendo will be very busy at taking down every repo.

Good job Nintendo you took down all of the Switch emulators when the Switch has maybe a year left and most of the games people want emulated are already working, and you can easily acquire the emulator and roms still. You really accomplished something.

Their greed has no end. Nintendo earned 70 billion in revenue in these Switch years, while having the best profit ratio in the industry, and they think they are losing money because emulators...

It also doesn't help much that Youtubers will help perpetuate the cycle more with more popular Youtubers like Mutahar of SomeOrdinaryGamers continuing to advocate for emulation and constantly hammering home how "Nintendo needs to make a good service to access all of their old games" and other common talking points without asking the question of "is it the most prominent consumers of emulation also part of the problem?" like you pointed out, all while the Youtube comments mindlessly follow like sheep.

It also doesn't help much that Emulation is going the way of the dodo beyond the PS4/XBONE generation and whatever console Nintendo puts out since the concept of exclusives on a console has been killed for quite some time and most games nowadays end up on PC, reducing the need for future console emulators outside of the niche case of someone previously making the choice to buy a console version of a game. Nintendo keeping thier games on the Switch is one of the big factors besides the unpatchable hardware exploit that gave the scene a headstart and the hardware being easy to crack becuase the console had exclusive games and there are people who don't want to shell out money for a console just to play a handful of games (especially those you described as entitled).

It's only going to be a matter of time before Emulation is killed by the mindless fools who failed to keep things out of the spotlight and constantly trying to keep it mainstream which causes ire of the big companies unlike the previous generations of people who used emulators in the past. It won't be Nintendo or some other big name company who will kill emulation, it'll be us for failing to keep quiet and perpetuating a cycle that allowed it to happen in the same ways we often crtitisize the corporations for.

I didn't even have to look up the fact that they were monetizing the project somehow and yep, they had a patreon.

From one of the paid perks:

• You also get early access to progress reports and access to a priority support channel on our Discord.

Essentially, to get priority support, you have to pay.

Pretty sure they could win this case, as emulating is perfectly legal, unless uh... they used something they shouldn't have used in order to develop the emulator, essentially profiting off someone else's work. Can see why Nintendo would shut it down.

Just don't be greedy next time, I guess.

The way I have my PC set up, I can't easily switch (no pun intended) inputs, so emulation is the only way I play console games anymore. I still buy the games (and consoles) I emulate, I just don't play them on the console. What this means for me is basically that I won't be buying any new Nintendo games until I can emulate them again. I'm sure Nintendo doesn't care, and I doubt anyone here cares, but I felt like saying it anyway. I still have all my old consoles and games, they're just stored away in a closet and I have no intention of pulling them out to play any time soon. Thankfully, I have tons of old games I can go back and play again, as well as a library of games I can play on PC. This won't hurt me.

If you wait until things start dying to start preserving, that's how you lose media between the cracks. Look at all the lost media that exists in the world
The hardware isn’t the media. By ALL means, backup and preserve the games RIGHT now. But the system? History has shown us that there is no time limit to emulate it.

And thats "agreement" must be "cancel the development of the emulator and You won't get a demand"...

Seems like I will be making an active effort to only buy Nintendo products second hand, thankfully, I already began that effort years ago.

I get really tired of this "don't pay for emulators mentality" It's not illegal, and while yes, it may put a target on their backs, there's no illegal thing going on to charge someone for an emulator. Bleem! was a commercial emulator that was sold, not downloaded for free. and while they died due to the lawsuit, they DID technically win that lawsuit.

Keep in mind you had to join Cemu's patreon to get early builds, and nobody batted an eyelash. If a developer wants to get someone to buy them a coffee, beer or whatever for their development, they should have the right to do so.
