WHY THE FUDGE I DONT WORK ON MY GAMES WHY WHY WHY WHY

[ for god (or whatever stupid shit you believe in) if you call me "anything" like emo or shit after this topic, I swear to (that same thing that you believed in previously) that you'll pay for it. ]

Why?
I'm going to enroll in DreamBuildPlay competition but I can't force myself to work on my tetris game in order to learn XNA and then make my game for the competition.

My question is, why do you think is that, why me that all of my love is about games and making them, is postponing working on my games? why I'm being lazy and doing other stuff when my mind is always with the game itself? Why? this dreamBuildPlay is very very good opportunity for me for alot of reasons but I still like don't care but whenever I'm talking about it with friends, I'm so high tempered and happy about it, I see it (and whole indie-ism) as a future for me but when it comes to actually working on them or actually reading stuff or in general, actually working on something that I say I love, I fail and I'll be doing stuff that I don't really mention rather than things that I always say I love.

I have this problem with learning Japanese too, I have posted alot of posts about how to learn Japanese and found alot of stuff for it but I don't actually read them.

why.

I know its not uncommon in indie's and would love to know what helped them to force themselves on their work, since in indie's, atleast most of the time, there is no boss to force you to release something and there is much higher chance procrastination.

I was reading some interviews with some of folks that got good games on Community Games (namely Johnny Biscuit Romp Platform or something like this) that I was amazed! he was like spending 3 days on making a DS homebrew and 6 days on porting it to CG ! I spent 9 months on a platformer engine with Flash and its just in version 0.14 ! and I'm a Software Engineer and he was a sophomore at that time, how the hell they are this productive?

I swear on Miyamoto's penis, whenever this game finishes, I'll write everyone's name on the first page who called me emo on this topic and link to every detail I can find to them. and I'll make that game just to do this.

Look instead of bitching to us, writing walls of text nobody's going to read, and making empty threats, just go and make the fricking game already.

So emo that guy, God! :glare:

Guys, you do know calling people "emo" is much more immature then what he posted right? So you are making yourselves look bad. Congratulations.

Who the hell are you and what have you ruined here?

Want to start another fight? I'll be glad to participate with an immature bitch like yourself.

Happens to me all the time, it sucks :/
I want to focus on one thing but I can't...

Yeah, I have no concentration. I'd love to be creative and make games and stuff, but it takes so long I almost lose my vision over what I'm doing and just get impatient.
I wish I could be patient :\.

First, trying to shield yourself from insults by saying "don't call me ______, and if you do, I'm threatening you with __________ over the internet" is going to turn a potentially serious topic that could help you into a joke topic. Edit your first post.

Anyway, the dilemma you describe happens to me all the time. For example, I've laid out a detailed plan on a website I'd like to build, and I already know plenty of PHP and MySQL, but I got a few books on the topic to learn more so I could make the site really great. So, I began to read one of them, and I coded the first 6 files I'd need to make it functional, but after that, I kind of stopped. Yet at the same time, when I'm in a group setting, I'm more likely to get my work finished, because I don't want to disappoint or look like a slacker. I don't know why my (or our) psychology is such that motivation drops off quickly after initial conception of an idea, but here are some potential solutions:

1) Make yourself accountable.
Fear of a consequence may be the only way to get yourself working on a continual basis. Since this is your game, the only negative consequences are the ones you'll create, so make yourself accountable to others, even if its just perceived. For example, start a blog updating your progress on the game, and set actual timelines / deadlines for your progress. That way, if you don't meet them, you risk "failing" the readers, which will hopefully motivate you to not do that.

2) Schedule / Timeline
Like I said in the first one, a timeline is really important here. And not just "I'll have it done by next Friday". Cut it up into small, REALISTIC chunks, and get little pieces done. As the old saying goes - "How does one eat a whale? One bite at a time."

3) Be consistent
Working on something for 18-hours straight and then not working on it for a few days, then repeating the cycle (I've done that a lot), has the potential for failure, as at some point, it becomes "eh, I'll do it later.", which never comes. Set a time that you'll spend on the project every day, or every other day, or every other other day, for a set amount of time that is "project time". When project time is up, wrap it up for the day, and come back next time. It'll take some discipline, but if you can get a rhythm going, it gets easier to make progress.

So, good luck, and I hope one (if not all) of these techniques helps you. Also, watch your emotions on the internets - they're flame fodder.

Your self defeating which feeds your lack of motivation. Your hyped up onplaying games that you believe you are a 1 man team that can make a unique game

and the yearning to learn Japanese. Video Games - wanting to learn Japanese... let me guess you also want to take some form or martial arts or draw manga or have a desire to be called Ken for some reason.

Comics, lack of social activites and video games poisoned you ability to handle reality. Thats what I am thinking. You already are in a confrontation with a boss you dont even have a job with.

Probably the difference between actually working on a project and seeing a real outcome vs thinking about it and no actual motivation to get up and do it

This is just 1 persons opinion

test84, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Bottom line: Get your lazy ass off the chair/bed/whatever and get shit done. Set goals/targets every week and see to it that they are completed. Don't sit around complaining to the Internet where no one really gives a damn about your problems.

You're a man. Fix this your way, yourself.
