Why are they called hoverboards when they dont hover?

Because the inventor was lazy with names, or want to tricc small little children to buy them (The inventor actually did it wtf), or he/she was out of ideas for names, and you feel like you are hovering when you use them.

Back to the future promised us them by around the time they hit. That is what we got instead.

Functionally with the weight based movement and what have you I guess it did act a bit like most sci fi versions of the theme.

It's an anti-faceplant device that works around 80-90% of the time. You can lean forward, and not faceplant on the ground!

It doesn't work on vertical walls, stairs, or cliffs though.
