The downloadable e-shop demo that's usable 30 times. 10 minutes of gameplay.
Preplay Thoughts:
- personally, I hate horror games. There is something about controlling your avatar that makes it terrible, and I always end up wasting ammunition on enemies because I'm in PANIC mode.
- Oozes? Really, Capcom?
- not much body horror for this one, the Oozes don't look that horrid, and you never see a transformation into one...at least not yet.
- I like the idea of demoing on eshop - makes it much easier to grab it
- I did play through the demo on Mercs as well. It was highly disappointing. Crap visuals, not much atmosphere, and interesting controls.
What Made Me Happy:
- the introduction that says "there is something familar about this place"
- the "dowsing machine/item scanner" - it looks like you can scan enemies as well, I wonder if that will lead to gameplay mechanics - maybe highlighting a weak point on an enemy, or just creating more items.
- the sound! Seeing the enemies attack and kill a victim, and then hearing the sucking noises. Gross, but seriously creepy - made me apprehensive about approaching the enemies.
What Made Me Sad:
- no health meter? I know, it's not a realistic convention, but having the view blur and having the blood rimmed around it isn't good either.
- your partner - Parker's (?) voice acting is pretty bad. He sounds European, but like every single blasted stereotype ever! Not good.
- it looks like they introduce a new baddy in this one. The guy who shoots your partner in the last cutscene is pretty bad-a**, but he looks generic!
What I'd Change in the Final Product:
- can I have my health meter back? I would like to know how badly I'm damaged before something happens.
- can we trigger the dowsing machine with a button? It will be nice to be able to switch from it to weapons without touching my touchscreen.
- change the voice actor for Parker. He sounds like he's phoning in the European accent.
- make us watch an important character turn into an Ooze before our eyes. It makes the horror much more real!
- pacing. Don't show us the Ooozes until the last minute, and then make it doubly horrorific. Make sure the Oozes terrify us.
Would I buy the final product?
Probably not. I'm not a big fan of RE or any horror franchise. (It's just that I like to get scared, I don't want to react to being scared by wasting ammo or screaming.) The Mercs game is different. All enemies are easily dispatched and you have plenty of ammo.
Edit: Also looking to trade a copy of Super Street Fighter 4 for the 3DS for another 3DS game. No manual. Preferred games are Tales of the Abyss or Mario Kart 7. (Will add monies for either of the preferred games.)
