So My Dad's Surgery Is Tomorrow

he might be in surgery at this very moment. I fell asleep last night, early, so I was awake when my parents left. he had to be at the hospital by 7 with the surgery being at 9. it's almost 10 now. not sure how long it takes.

just got some news. they just took him back for surgery. it's supposed to last an hour. he'll be in the hospital 'til at least Thursday. my mom just texted me.

the surgery went well. he's now in recovery. though, I'm kinda worried about his drinking habits now that he only has one kidney.

Surgery can have a profound effect on people. Maybe he'll come round to realising he has been given a second chance at life and choose to spend it wisely with you and your family. I do hope so and I hope you celebrate with a good refreshing glass of milk

I hope so, but he's probably the most stubborn person I've ever met, so it's probably not likely. he was drinking and smoking last night and yesterday afternoon. I think he drinks 8 beers at a time, so that was 16 beers yesterday on top of smoking. he seems to have absolutely no will power as he couldn't even go two days without either.

my mother hates alcohol, but she still buys it for him since he can no longer drive. my grandfather (her dad) died of alcohol dementia or died with it at least. his mother outlived him, so he died young. my dad's dad died of a heart attack. cancer is more prevalent on my mom's side. my mother has very strong will power. she doesn't drink or smoke. in fact, I've never seen her do either, and I'll be 40 next year. that's a long time especially when you compare it to the two days my dad couldn't even last.

my mom also doesn't like smoking. she's okay with marijuana and me smoking it. there have been a few times where she mentioned that the upstairs smelled like pot after she woke up. lol

I get where your coming from. I lost my mother to MS 21 years ago now and she smoked right up until her last day. I hated smoking growing up and always moaned at her to stop it but i guess in her last months and days it was the only enjoyment she had left out of life due to the horrible debilitating nature of that disease.

Infact, it really is a wonder how i ended up smoking weed for 20 odd years. Started about at 18 but actually gave it up last month! Im 40 and 3 quarters now lol!!!

I will say it was more of a forced quitting however due to financial issues with this pandemic, i found it soooo hard to stop smoking it on my own but there's no looking back for me now. Never say never but I don't miss it now. But I can't take any credit for it through will power!

Your dad probably thinks the same way my mother did and it's hard to tell them the opposite when they are so set in their ways. I would say don't let it ruin the time you have left with him.... And i do hope that he still has a good long way to go man.

As for the drinking, that's a different beast I think. I saw enough of alcohols effects to put me right off at a young age and my younger brother has his demons with it...... I know the battle you have there. They simply don't want to listen but again, it doesn't stop me trying to get him to stop. It's all we can do i guess!

Sorry, i seem to have rambled on!

looks like someone in my mother's department at work has covid, so nearly everyone went home early. she has to stay home for five days ('til Monday) to be tested. she called my dad's doctor from work to ask if she should stay or not (you were able to stay), but he suggested she wait at home for the test. my dad might not survive covid.

That's a tough position to be in, my guy. Sorry to hear he's losing a kidney, but I hope he learns from it and lives.
