Short Game Review: RE Mercs 3D (3DS)
Well, let me be frank for a moment. I actively dislike the RE franchise (except for the
movies, which are fun). Why? Bad plot for a video game. Some big corporation is trying
to fuck over the world with a bioweapon (the T-virus), and a team is sent in to stop them.
Throw in a few expected twists - like how a member of the team betrays them, and you have
RE. It's so generic that it verges on a parody. You have Chris Redfield, who is the
action guy. Jill Valentine, as the action girl. Rebecca as the glass cannon, and Wesker
as the generic good guy turned baddie. It's good that the first RE game on the 3DS is
nothing more than a fleshed out mini-game - the story is pretty damn atrocious, and this
release of Mercs will draw in a new fanbase, in time for the release of RE Relevations.
Things I Like:
I like that it's timed, and you get extra time for actually sitting through the finishers.
Combat is smooth, and the different characters have crazy different finishers/physical
moves. It makes for a different game. Chris throws punches, and can knock down
surrounding enemies. Hunk has almost no range with his finishers, except for his elbow
strike. Rebecca's moves make me laugh - her butt based one...hehehe. Unlocking skills
does help and the RPG like way of leveling the skills by using them is helpful.
Things I'm Neutral About:
The tutorial missions were entirely too long. I do like the boss of tier 3, although it
took me about ten tries to bring it down, and then I got SS rank. I wish we had a second
analog stick, so that we could look around easily. (Also, the finishers help with that,
with inviniciblity frames and you seeing an enemy in the forground.)
Things I'm Sad About:
The sound is really crap on this. It sounds compressed, but it's okay. The 3D actually hurts my eyes - it's terribly done and really doesn't add much to this. (I found myself usually missing my shot due to the double images.) It's terribly done as well...
My Verdict?
I'd probably still buy it. It's fun for short bursts and even though I suck at games like this, I had fun. Veterans would probably dislike the first few tiers, but then it gets intense. (The sound of a chainsaw is never good!)
Life Update:
I'm sick with a cold and contemplating skipping my Monday classes. Also, my laptop is prone to overheating and shutting down - I gotta do some laptop repair work on Chinese New Year - which is the 20th. What a pain in the tush.
