Rant #1 - Uninspired Nicks

Welcome to the new addition to my blog - Random Rants. In these lovable publications I will mention all those things that make me cringe in life. We'll start with nicks that should've never been created - nicks that make me want to kill the people who use them.

As you already know, I tend to engage myself in sometimes futile disputes about hardware or software, purely for sport. Sometimes a third party enters those relatively serious discussions - I mean those very special people who label themselves with very special nicks.

I can understand that some people simply aren't creative - that's okay. I'm not asking anyone to create a breathtaking essay though, I'm simply asking people to choose names which are not making them look like complete douchebags, fanboys and heavy-weight idiots. I also understand how some people like to express their feelings connected to particular products... but don't You have signatures for that? Are Your lives so uneventful that the only identity You can assume is the identity that was created by someone else?

You know I'm talking about You. You, the people who are so grey and boring that You cannot even choose a nick that's inventive in any way. You who blend in the masses of SonicTheHedgehog123's, LuigiFanNumber1's, SonyLover23's, XBoxDudez45, CoDGoD88's and other nicks of this sort. Who are You?

Why am I asking? Because every single time I see Your nicks, I sincerely want to punch you all in the mouth. How is picking a name difficult? It's just a name. It's not like you're writing an elaborate backstory for imaginary characters, you just create a nickname for Internet use not to show off your real identity.

How are you going to name your child? Will you do what Robin Williams and his wife did and just say "Ah, screw it, let's name her Zelda"?

Think about it. Think about yourself and what you represent. Think about how people perceive you - the Human Banner rather than a person.

I'll give you an example of how people react when they see your downright bad nicks. When I discuss for example hardware with knowledgable people on a forum dedicated to gaming, I expect educated opinions from people who actually have something to say. I do my best to compare competing consoles as objectively as I can and finish my post with a quick conclusion with a spice of personal opinion, as one should in a proper paragraph. It usually starts off pleasant but all of a sudden one of Your kind rolls in, let's call him Alvaro3DS for convinience sake. I see Your post, I even read it, but I don't see letters, I don't see the message. I don't want to reply to you at all... errata, I do want to reply. I want to tell you to f*ck off and hide in your fanboy cave. Your nick tells me all I need to know about your opinion, I immediately dismiss what you had to say, even if it made sense. You're not Alvaro anymore, You're a walking 3DS, why the hell would I want to talk with you?

Another example. Let's imagine a discussion about shooters. People name their favourites and least favourite titles and give reasons as to why they like them, and then You roll in, MasterChief235 and nobody even reads what you had to say - they already know. Your post is completely pointless, you could just as well write "I like trains" and people are still going to understand that You probably like Halo.

Do people really want to be percieved like this? Why, explain it to me, why do they sacrifice part of their personality to become a walking advert? Why do they choose to become less of a person and more of a franchise? Do they think it's cool? It's not cool. Stop it, please, before you lose all dignity.

And all those who agree, do comment and thank you all for reading.

Time and time again I ask myself why such a smart guy chose a nick like this. You really deserve a better one. ;)

I completely agree with this, unless we're talking about MMOs...where people tend to covet "rare" (read: common) names. Which I don't really see as a problem.
*stares at list of Tera character names* >_>
But on forums and the like, I really don't see why people make stupid, pointless, generic screen names.

If I ever see a person with an idiotic nick in an MMO, like UberKratoSFag123, I *am* going to PvP or at the very least insult said person... I would strike with great vengeance and furrrrious anger upon those who attempt to poison and destroy my gaming experience... And they will know my name is Foxi4 when I lay my vengeance upon them.

*cough cough* Where was I..?

I was talking more names like "Hate" and other such short words people always take. No numbers. No mashups.
Or God. I always try to get God...

I called myself Kotomi.Ichinose (no spaces/underscores allowed) in the Tera beta.
I dun see a problem with that >_> It's a clean name at least.

I see a huge difference between Kotomi.Ichinose which is an actual name and for example Pr0.G4m3R.98. :P

This is another type of nicks that pisses me off. All I want to say when I read it is "No you're f*cking not".

now I wonder if my nick falls into the uninspired category...

anyway, I do hate when I play a MMO and see 80 Narutos, 100 Sasukes, a dozen Gokus, and a few generic names like PureTanker, AgiKnight, ConMage, etc. thanks for telling us your cookie-cutter build.

If someone does not identify with their character, does not want to roleplay and treats a game as just a game, those Class Nicks can actually be helpful in party-building as they tell you exactly what to expect for a given character. It's quite useful even if it underlines the weaknesses of given characters in PvP skirmshes.

As for your nick, it does fall in the same category however it is a far milder instance.

FencingFox is actually somewhat interesting and definitelly not an ordinary nickname - it's not a character from the usual cast, it's an in-game enemy that you particularily like. Not exactly the most inspired nick, but hey - I'll take that over Goku676 any day. The FTW part stands out, but then again the 4 in mine is there for no reason at all, so there.

Overall the nick doesn't "stab you in the eye" and that's a good thing - there's a thin red line one shouldn't cross and I don't think that yours does, although if you like foxes, you can just as well think of a different nickname that would stress that while keeping the Fencing Fox as your avatar... but I digress.
I'm guessing you consider my username uninspiring.
I actually somewhat like it - finkmac can be divided into fink, which sounds akin to think and mac which is... well, just Mac. Together they compose "Think Mac", which is surely a reference to the "Think Different" catchphrase Apple uses. It shows a degree of creativity and it's clever. It still is product placement, but it's not done in a *dumb* way.

I agree with this blog as well.

Out of curiosity, what do you think of names that don't mean anything, but are unique and without "12345" or the like at the end?

I usually look at them from the phonetic point of view - I either apply English phonetic rules and read it or ask for how it's supposed to be read and then decide whether it "sounds" right or if it's just someone punching the keyboard.

People have the power to "name" things, which is a big part of being human - we are fully capable of just "making up terms" and attach meanings to them.

Fink, also happens to be the name of a project that ports Unix/Linux apps... I learned that when someone asked if I had named myself after that...

Mine's zoo-for incase you didn't know.
Do I fall under the "uninspired" or nicks that you hate?

...my mind automatically "fixed" the spelling of your nick by adding an "l" sound to make it Xulphor, sounding akin to sulphur. It's the first time I've noticed that the "l" is not there, if you hadn't pointed it out, I would never notice.

But yeah, it sounds alright.

By the way, I have nothing againts adding numbers to nicks if one wants to - what I'm againts are uninspired nicks with little to no thought involved in their creation.

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
