Rant #1 - Uninspired Nicks

Welcome to the new addition to my blog - Random Rants. In these lovable publications I will mention all those things that make me cringe in life. We'll start with nicks that should've never been created - nicks that make me want to kill the people who use them.

As you already know, I tend to engage myself in sometimes futile disputes about hardware or software, purely for sport. Sometimes a third party enters those relatively serious discussions - I mean those very special people who label themselves with very special nicks.

I can understand that some people simply aren't creative - that's okay. I'm not asking anyone to create a breathtaking essay though, I'm simply asking people to choose names which are not making them look like complete douchebags, fanboys and heavy-weight idiots. I also understand how some people like to express their feelings connected to particular products... but don't You have signatures for that? Are Your lives so uneventful that the only identity You can assume is the identity that was created by someone else?

You know I'm talking about You. You, the people who are so grey and boring that You cannot even choose a nick that's inventive in any way. You who blend in the masses of SonicTheHedgehog123's, LuigiFanNumber1's, SonyLover23's, XBoxDudez45, CoDGoD88's and other nicks of this sort. Who are You?

Why am I asking? Because every single time I see Your nicks, I sincerely want to punch you all in the mouth. How is picking a name difficult? It's just a name. It's not like you're writing an elaborate backstory for imaginary characters, you just create a nickname for Internet use not to show off your real identity.

How are you going to name your child? Will you do what Robin Williams and his wife did and just say "Ah, screw it, let's name her Zelda"?

Think about it. Think about yourself and what you represent. Think about how people perceive you - the Human Banner rather than a person.

I'll give you an example of how people react when they see your downright bad nicks. When I discuss for example hardware with knowledgable people on a forum dedicated to gaming, I expect educated opinions from people who actually have something to say. I do my best to compare competing consoles as objectively as I can and finish my post with a quick conclusion with a spice of personal opinion, as one should in a proper paragraph. It usually starts off pleasant but all of a sudden one of Your kind rolls in, let's call him Alvaro3DS for convinience sake. I see Your post, I even read it, but I don't see letters, I don't see the message. I don't want to reply to you at all... errata, I do want to reply. I want to tell you to f*ck off and hide in your fanboy cave. Your nick tells me all I need to know about your opinion, I immediately dismiss what you had to say, even if it made sense. You're not Alvaro anymore, You're a walking 3DS, why the hell would I want to talk with you?

Another example. Let's imagine a discussion about shooters. People name their favourites and least favourite titles and give reasons as to why they like them, and then You roll in, MasterChief235 and nobody even reads what you had to say - they already know. Your post is completely pointless, you could just as well write "I like trains" and people are still going to understand that You probably like Halo.

Do people really want to be percieved like this? Why, explain it to me, why do they sacrifice part of their personality to become a walking advert? Why do they choose to become less of a person and more of a franchise? Do they think it's cool? It's not cool. Stop it, please, before you lose all dignity.

And all those who agree, do comment and thank you all for reading.

I have the most intellectually stimulating nick on the temp; nothing fires up the brain quite like trying to figure out how to pronounce "Gahars".
I have the most intellectually stimulating nick on the temp; nothing fires up the brain quite like trying to figure out how to pronounce "Gahars".
Gahars
/'gɑːhɑːz/ or /'gɑːhɑːrz/ depending on whether I'd want to pronounce it in a more British or more American way...

...unless the first "a" is shorter than the latter one, in which case it would be "ʌ", however it really doesn't change much in the way I'd pronounce it. :P

A side note on numbered names:
 • Prowler used to be Prowler485 (right?). He ditched the numbers.
 • Phoenix Goddess used to be phoenixgoddess27 (right?). She ditched the numbers
The moral of these examples: real tempers ditch the numbers. I for one have never used numbers in my usernames. Since I started developing an "internet identity" it has either been Guild of Deals, Guild McCommunist, Guild Communist, or usually some addition of Guild (for example, my Borderlands characters are Guildith, Guildecai, Guildand, and Guildick). I also shorten it to "Guild" for character names.

I used to be Alex_32571, but i removed the numbers and the generic real-life name (though the numbers were my school ID, that doesn't matter in an online forum.)

My current username probably makes people think I'm a huge pokemon fanboy but I'm not. I just thought it would be a nice name, and it hasn't been used before. It's also way more memorable. I agree with this entire blog, basically. Haha.

I was talking more names like "Hate" and other such short words people always take. No numbers. No mashups.Or God. I always try to get God... I called myself Kotomi.Ichinose (no spaces/underscores allowed) in the Tera beta.I dun see a problem with that >_> It's a clean name at least.
I see a huge difference between Kotomi.Ichinose which is an actual name and for example Pr0.G4m3R.98. :P This is another type of nicks that pisses me off. All I want to say when I read it is "No you're f*cking not".
Ah I thought you were talkin' more about unoriginality lol. But of course I did just quickly read and reply before goin' to work, so.

I don't like most nicks in games or forums cuz they're nonsensical and just messed up, in forums I use my nickname of Skelletonike (which is somewhat of a mix beetween electronic skeleton that I made when I was 13), and in games I use Emidius, one of my fave saints and also a cool latin word which can mean Half-God.

in every mmo i play, i spend 30min to and hour in creating a character. half of that time is thinking of a nick to use.

i used to be game01 here. but then i used my real name. now if only i could use my real name everywhere i want to but they're unavailable. so now i use nryn99.

there was a game i played where top players had nicks like oski, AzaleaLinwelin, Shawty, Jaa, markymarc, Miyaho, Saidie and more.

but there were still those like IntelCore2Quad.

Used to be "prowler_"

The main reason you see such names are because the people behind them can't think of anything better on the fly when they go online for the first time. They go with the first thing that pops in their head. "Oh? That's taken? Add some numbers. Everybody does that." And you know what? That's absolutely fine.

The issue comes in that these people also tend to stick to a name even if it's not great just for convenience sake. I know I personally had to abandon my old 'skullman555626' moniker years ago. Over time I ended up never signing in to the sites I used that name on anyway, thus it wasn't as inconvenient as I had thought.
I agree with this and I think that avatars can have a similar effect.
Believe me, avatars are a far more complicated matter.

My name is awesome, right right?

Also, I think it's pretty awesome she's named Zelda.
Used to be "prowler_"
I find your feeble prowler history disturbing.
My name is awesome, right right? Also, I think it's pretty awesome she's named Zelda.
Perhaps that was a bad example as the name Zelda actually is a pretty name and surely the game princess was only one of the influences - more inspiration, less fanboyism. That said, I was just proving a point - you wouldn't call your child MasturChiff, would you? ;)

Funny coming from someone who also has a generic name, but you got a good point, if I see another damn player with the name Spartan1012Uberwin or KillerX or Shadowthedarkeness im going to send spyware, im going to track them down, and I will punch them in the fucking face.

I don't think my name's generic, at least not according to Google. Foxi4 was a part of my very first E-Mail, it stuck with me since primary and I think it has a nice ring to it.

That said, I rarely use it in online video games unless I know I'll be playing with people who simply know me as Foxi. Those who are "close" to me usually use variations of the name anyways. My girlfriend calls me Foxi-Woxi, my buddies online use Fox or Foxter.

Maybe you should change it to FoxiFour, just so it doesn't end in a numeral.
