Please play "The Last Story" (Wii)

To clarify, my intention here is not to write a review of this game. This is a summary of the game, if anything. I've looked all over Discord for players to play this game online, to no avail - and this game is an absolute gem for anyone interested in action games, RPG games or story-driven games. The game's 6-player versus and co-op functionality both work online via modern-day Wiimmfi; however despite my best attempts throughout this week, I have found nobody who's able to play.

Why am I writing this then? To cut a long story short, since you didn't click on this for a review, The Last Story is a good game. It's actually very good. After playing it through, I would say that the game has its flaws but what it does right, it does so well that it overpowers its drawbacks. In some respects, The Last Story still has not been emulated by any other game and remains a unique mix of RPG and modern, real-time combat with a story that forges bonds between the characters which make the player feel a true connection with them, woven into some really nice hand-crafted environments from castle to caverns. But while I recommend everyone with a Wii at least gives this game a try, that's not exactly why I'm writing this blog post.

This blog post is, honestly, a bit of a last resort to see if I can find anyone interested in playing The Last Story online with me. If you're on the fence, practically any reviews online will tell you that this game is good. It was made by the creator of the original Final Fantasy with the composer from that game as well, and focuses on throwing himself back into that mindset when he created FF - but with experience, new tools and new ideas. So as you can tell, this game is at least worth looking into if you have a sliver of interest. You can play the game online using an easy-to-use Wiimmfi patcher of your choice, whether that's patching an ISO or using an on-the-fly disc patcher.

So to summarise, if you have even a small interest in this game, I recommend you give it a try. It's worth dusting out the Wii (or Wii U!) for, and I'd love to be able to play with more people online in a game which, after I decided to try it (as someone who is usually not a fan of RPGs) I got hooked until the end, and I'm sure there are more people out there who will have a similar experience if they give it a try. It would be really nice to play this game online, even once, and I'm sure it would be fun for everyone involved. Let me know below if you're interested!

EDIT: Here's a link to the Discord server I have created for the game: https://discord.gg/n4ybGcJ

Pandora tower looked nice, and was therefore part of the rainfall op to bring 3 games out of japan, but when I played it I can't say I find it interesting :(
it's repetitive and not that nice graphically, at least how I remember it. I never completed it and stopped after the first dungeon.

But maybe you can like it.

I'm not sure why this blew up again, but it did. Nice.

@RedRose30 You can play it online to this day! It's great fun if you use Wiimmfi. We try to play online in a little discord DM group, but we may make a server if enough people are interested.
And yes, it restarts the story from the beginning with your old equipment. The issue is only bosses/mini-bosses scale with your difficulty, so you obliterate most enemies.

I honestly think this is a much better game than Xenoblade, which I couldn't really get into by comparison. I loved some of Xenoblade's stuff, like the music and the environment, but it lacked the gameplay and characters of The Last Story. The length of TLS was also much more fair compared to Xenoblade, which is very long and part of the reason I didn't play as much of Xenoblade.. it just seemed like a lot to get through.

Pandora just didn't appeal to me, unfortunately. Looked visually par with ICO from 2001 and seemed a little too weird for my taste.

And no, you can't use a gamecube pad @eriol33 - just classic and wiimote+nunchuck. Though if you played on Dolphin, you could map a GC controller to the game's controls.

I'm with you on that. I hate how games lock certain content/achievements behind online because there's always going to be that point where if you buy it too late, it's 100% impossible to get without hacking (Xenoblade X is also giving me that issue with the miiverse achievements). I never liked permanently missable items in games, and online content is much worse than that.

I do look forward to playing this game. I'm sure it will be much better than the current FF games. FF went downhill after Sakaguchi left. It's too bad he couldn't obtain FF again :/

For *reasons* I still haven't been able to play this game. I think I will first dust my Wii U and look around where the hell did I leave my game disc to play it first on my own, then perhaps I will try to do multiplayer. I hope I enjoy it. (and I hope I stop buying games that I later don't play /s)

@TheMrIron2
Thanks for responding! I just realized that on gamefaq, there's a save that has all of the online weapons. While he did get all of the online weapons, he did not get all of the non online weapons. It says that ng+ is started, so I just wanted to know if it would start from the beginning on another ng+ (like the Souls series for example) so I could go through the game and get everything. That's great that it loops! Even though he got all the online weapons, there are still dyes that he's missing so I'd still like to play online. That and it sounds fun :)

And I'm happy that me posting made this thread alive again. Sweet :D

If people are interested, I'd be really happy to create a Discord server for this game. Maybe like this post if you are? I already have a few people in a group DM.

I'm interested and while I do have that save from gamefaqs (which has level 99 weapons), I do not know how to actually play lol.

For the wifi, I know that I need to get the iso file for this game onto my usb by using that homebrew app. After that, I use that wiimmfi patcher on the iso to change the online files. After that, do I stick my usb into my wii and play from there by using homebrew? I never used this before so I'm clueless.

When I play from my usb stick (if that's what I even need to do lol), does it use the same save that's in the console, or does it create another save file? I'd prefer to use my actual console save.

@RedRose30 Some USB loaders, such as USB Loader GX will allow you to patch the game's online for Wiimmfi on-the-fly without modifying the ISO. Wiimm has a simple PC patcher developed so you can drag-and-drop the ISO onto a script to patch it.

It uses the actual console save when playing from USB.

I actually just figured it out. There's an app that you can put on you sd card and it starts the game up in wifi mode. I managed to connect and my friend code is 4515-7214-7712 if anyone wants to add me. The name is Mathael. Don't know if it's a character's name or the name of the person who made this save.

NVM just changed my name. It's Gigi now :)

Being able to play online again is awesome! I'll prob try the usb method at some point to not burn out the disc drive, but this is very exciting. Never realized how easy it was!

In terms of starting another new game, I have two save files. One is a reptid's cave mission by Count Arganan, and the other says "the outsider has been returned to the cosmos." The gamefaq save said that one file was in the epilogue. I'm assuming that's the outsider one right? Just want to make sure so I can go onto another save without wasting time.

@RedRose30: I have to disagree about the current FF games, I haven't played XI or XIV, but I think all FF games are great in their own right, they just keep on drastically changing how the games work so it's hard to compare them to each other. 10 years from now I bet they'll release a remastered version of the XIII trilogy and it'll be well received. XV was unfinished but even so the gameplay and characters were really well done. If they ever do finish it (in a remaster fifteen years from now), it'll probably be well received as well.

@TheMrIron2: I'd like to play together some time, but I haven't played the game since I finished it years ago, so it probably won't be anytime soon.

@RedRose30 Yes, Reptid's Cave is the start of the game, and the Outsider file you have there is the epilogue.

@xxNathanxx No worries! I'm just trying to field some players for the game.

I have added an invite link to a newly-created Discord server to the main post. I'll spread the word around and hopefully we can get some games going :)

I'm currently replaying the game due to a 6-years hiatus, never finished it and forgot about the storyline. I've never played multiplayer, but would gladly try it as soon as I progress more on the game.

TC, this though is very noble although u must recognize that numbers of tempers are very limited and ur effort won't last long.

I suggest to record the game play and possibly cut it shot and upload it to youtube, with instructions about setup and where to finds us.

The more people watch our vid the more people might join to :P

I've written a set-up guide that is available on the Discord server for Wii, Wii U and PC play. I might publish it online as well. I'm also sharing my progress on a HD texture pack for the game there!

I've also seen a GoldenEye Wii discord server with over 200 members, so I remain optimistic :)
