Passed the 1000 views on my Youtube channel....yay! xD

For my tiny youtube channel with only a handful of video's....I now have over 1000 views. :toot:

I should really add more video's, but I had nothing to post since I did nearly nothing with my homebrew game for the past 4-6 month. going through some stuff work related...it's going better now. :D

I have "joined the darkside"...hahaha...bought a used macbook air 11.5 inch! Always wanted one! Too expensive, but found a deal and had saved up some money. Then went wild and got a mini, imac and macbook pro too! All from the period of 2011-2014. Yes they work well. Even have macos sonoma on my 2011 imac, only real issue is the GPU is not metal compatible! Anyway...the macs are a whole separate topic. Obviously I will do an attempt to port BatteryCheck to it at one point! :rofl2:
To answer the question: why? Well...as said always wanted one. For some stupid software and printer stuff that does not work on Linux. Some side intterest I am also learning about music, and to play Piano...sort of. and that software will also work best on either windows or macos. And...ever since it was announced I wanted to play with thunderbolt. This is the reason I now have 4 macs. total cost of the four machines was about 60% of the cost of a brand new macbook air. including the accessories....ehm....I might have been able to get a mac studio! :rofl2:

But...about batterycheck...for those 3 people that still might be interested ;)...the project ain't dead. Just slow and a bit "on hold". It's a hobby...not a payed job right. :D

Although I don't have any sympathies for the plantation of bitten fallen fruit, I'd like to think outside the box and get an iOS and an OS X device. Unfortunately, the Apple disciples are willing to pay crazy prices for old devices, which makes the hurdle quite high (it should still be supported at the moment).

Why get one in the first place? This is the same reason why I started looking into the Android operating system: It's hard to convincingly criticize what you don't know.

I think for you a 2009 imac might be a good choice. I see them arround for maybe 50 euro's in many cases. Yes, it's old and has a harddrive that might fail any moment. If you are willing to spend about 100 a 2011 is an option. They are still supported by OCLP (open core legacy patcher). This is basically a BIOS patcher and driver pack for more recent MacOS. And...any mac can run linux one way or another. even windows.

MacOS has a few quirks....there is no taskbar. Only the dock. Full screen and window tiling (drag to a corner) is only implemented really poorly. At least....for users of Linux and Windows. i do however love the touchpad on my macbook! It's awesome! It has multitouch gestures to do quick things. It's a gimick for sure...but a usefull one!

because of the switch to summertime I had to "reprogram" my DIY clock. Made it nearly 7 years ago with an ESP8266 and micropython. Still did not find the "need" to update it and implement a switch or whatever to easily set the summer time correction. I use NTP to keep it showing the current time and it works great. But daylight saving is not part of the protocol, and implementing checks for every change was too much of a hassle.
So to set it I need to unplug it from power, connect to my PC with USB, access the serial terminal into micropython, enable FTP, edit the script, and upload the new version over FTP.
In linux this is easy with minicom and krusader for the FTP transferes. in macos there was a CLI tool "cu" that basically allowed for the same thing as minicom. Finder did not want to connect to the FTP and with some trouble I got "mc" to connect and transfer. I really need to update this firmware....but....macos was "sufficient" and I did not have to boot linux. Which I do have on all my macs btw ;)

Dual or tripple boot is possible. It's just that the default bootmenu does not "See" the linux partition. You need to add drivers and edit a huge XML file. Then it shows up. But...I noticed this weekend if you update OCLP it removes the old configuration...so the drivers to boot linux and the mods to the xml are gone now. It's ok...I can restore it.
It's hard to convincingly criticize what you don't know.
I had a similar feeling. I know enough about windows to talk trash on it...every time I use my one crappy laptop that still has it it needs to update...and is unusable for hours! Lot's of frustration! reboots required after updating. Even worse...forced reboots!

For daily stuff macos is sufficient. browsing, email, teams for work (although it drains the battery really fast).

My take on mac hardware is that if it works, it's great! If it's broken....your ff'ed! Apple support is a scam! repairs are either not done at all or at insane prices for a simple repair. Watch lois rossman's video's about that...but...the older macs before 2011 are kinda repairable. yes it's proprietary motherbord is an issue. But RAM, CPU and in some cases even GPU is replaceble. Same for HDD swap to SSD. It's standard SATA internally. In macbooks it's a proprietary connector...but the signals are compatible with mSata and PCIe SSD's. Cheap adapters are available for that. The pages of iFixit will show how easy a certain model is to repair. or not. later than 2011 imac screens are glued! It's still doable...but you need replacement strips and a tool to remove the screen. Before that it was hold on by magnets. macbook screens are another story...but...as a unit still replacable. If you have one with a dead mainboard but working screen, and a second that has a broken screen but working mainboard...you can swap them. assuming the same year, model, etc... Battery replacement kit's are also available.

Sure: I'll get a Mac for Linux. :rofl2:
Of course it is a viable alternative to just use a given Mac. But my goal is especially getting to know OS X and even more iOS (with the whole walled garden rubbish, which is still true despite the fake sideloading offering).

Since I got to know Android and learned about it I can now say why I think it is mostly garbage. The experience with iOS is bound to be worse :creep:.

The whole topic is connected with political garbage as well: It won't take forever, soon we will be forced (first indirectly, then explicitly) to carry a locked computer with us for everyday life. This won't be a question of "You chose that vendor and accepted the TOS!" for very long anymore. The "Security!!!" nonsense abused for rolling out more and more anti-consumer stuff is dangerous and Apple is one of the leaders.

rossman's video's
I love hearing him rant. 👍

It seems you have had in total nearly 11.000 views already. It does help to have many video's I guess.

I really just have to create more content that might be interesting and just upload little bit's and pieces. it's just that I don't have anything interesting to show just yet. We'll see what happens. ;)

Thanx!
Funny story about the videos. I had my Wii testing emulator on screen record (without knowing) for a couple months until my harddrive filled up. When I realised I started uploading them to yt. None of them have sound or proper titles.
