Nintendo ROM Piracy Strategy

I was reading the 'temp the other day and something crossed my mind whilst people were asking for roms on sites (which is illegal). They all had a few things in common.

They
*couldn't be bothered to walk to the store to buy a game
*wanted to use cheats and edit the ROM

Nintendo should have seen this early on and supported AceKards, R4s and suchlike with an iTunes-style app store where people could download .nds roms for a price, with some type of DRM protection on them for games.

Look at iTunes. Music is readily available for pirating everywhere, but iTunes is still the most popular legal music download program there is! Imagine Nintendo's app. The ONLY legal way to download games, possibly for free via Club Nintendo/Nintendo Points. It would be a simple way to integrate legal ROM downloads within the site, maybe £5 less than the original game stores in the high street.

I can't really see a downside to this. You know what they always say. IF you can't beat them, join them.

If Nintendo had done this 3 years earlier, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation now. 9/10 of the people I know have flashcarts, so the way to exploit that market would not be to break into their houses and burn the carts, but the opposite, and help the guys with carts. I'm not saying that this will work now, but as aforementioned, it might have a few years back.

@spinal. seriously? :lol:[/quote]

you are pretty naive to think that would stop piracy, look at the ipod touch, you can download apps for free without ever going to the store, how has that stopped piracy? no matter what anti piracy measures are in place it always gets hacked, that is the way it is.

lol try saying that to a brazillian where games brand new are 3 times as much as we pay for games, it's the same in greece and all other places in the world, just because you can afford games, it doesn't mean everyone else can, people have every right to do what they want with their games if they rightfully pay for them (that's if they can afford them in the 1st place) you are just as bad as microsoft who vandalize peoples consoles which the way i see it as a criminal offence, they are just as bad as the offender, in this day and age where your rights are stripped away from you completely, we have every right to fight back and use what we have rightfully paid for, if i buy a console from nintendo i have every right to do whatever i want to it, i payed for it after all, the same with a house if you buy a house and you are the rightful owner of that house, how would you feel if someone said to you sorry you can't change the house because we have every right to vandalise your property and do whatever we want with your house regardless if you actually payed for it or not.

nintendo the fat cats are just as bad as the offenders in every way, the same goes for sony and microsoft, they use aggressive intrusive tactics to vandalize your property, what law covers us when they do that to us? absolutely nothing.

so don't go and protect the same people who are bullying you and messing with your console, that just doesn't sound right man.

(The following is based on US and local state law, obviously may not apply in other countries or areas)

As a home-owner, there are laws which you must operate within. Purposefully burning down your house, for example, is illegal. Operating a business from within without proper licensing, is illegal. Even not maintaining the outward appearance may be illegal, and subject to court action where they may (and have) ordered renovation on the owner's dime.

Purchasing something doesn't make you the inherent owner of infinite legal and moral rights. The world doesn't revolve around you.

You're the one who chose to use their platform. If you operate outside the bounds of their EULA they have no obligation or reason to support you. Don't like companies who attempt to stop people pirating on their systems? You know what? You can stop using their product. Don't blame the companies when you're the one choosing to buy their products.

"wah games are expensive that gives me the right to steal them."

i thought steam was doing really well?? imo services like steam are the only way pc gaming can survive, they basically bring a console to your computer, with the friends lists and such

lets face it, piracy and homebrew sells systems, the wii cant compete with xbox and ps3 in games or HD, but it is fully moddable and hackable in every which way, and its selling more than xbox and ps3 combined, the ps3 cant be hacked to barely run anything anymore, especially not backups, and its barely selling consoles, the ps2 was also moddable and hackable and was the most sold system ever, see a pattern? i also would never have bought a wii or ds if i couldnt run backups or homebrew on them, and if piracy became available on the ps3 today, i would have one by noon

You can't actually be serious.

The Wii is selling because Nintendo raped the market for casual gaming.

If you think even 5% of all Wiis in existence are modded, you're obviously living outside of reality.

youre gonna tell me that good games sell systems? you cant even argue the fact that the ps3 games arent better then wii games, and that comes from someone whos owned every major nintendo system ever and only one sony. and the ps3 can barely be put in the same conversation with the wii as far as sales go. i remember hearing little kids asking "is it modded" if you asked them if they would trade their parents for a ps2
