My friend and I wanted to see a movie today so we decided on the Avengers. Then we movie hopped to MIB3 because, why the hell not.
Kinda had bleak expectations for this movie. Usually movies are fine in trilogies so I don't feel like the franchise was stretched thin but most of the previews for the movie seemed kinda bland. Special effects seemed second rate and it was a bit nonsensical. But the movie wasn't as bad as I thought.
Humor is still just a lot of buddy cop or pop culture jokes, now with some fish out of water stuff since a majority of the movie takes place in 1969. Basic plot is that some alien assassin escapes from a supermax moon prison and goes to kill Agent K in the past so he doesn't lose his arm and so his race can invade earth and not be extinct from Agent K's defense plan thing. So Agent J goes back in time to stop him.
SO SPOILERS ARE AHEAD IF YOU CARED.
First off, Josh Brolin does give a very good performance as a young Agent K. He looks and plays the part really well. He was a real highlight in the movie. Although I found it odd that Tommy Lee Jones barely gets any screen time. He's in the beginning a bit and he's in the end for about five seconds but otherwise it's Smith/Brolin doing there thing. But as I said, Brolin is great so no big issues.
Plot wise, it's not that bad as a typical sci-fi time travel flick. Although one gaping hole I found was how Agent J was even in MIB if Agent K was killed in the past. Basically Agent K is killed in the past and Agent J realizes he has to jump back in time to save him. But he's still part of MIB and in this reality, Agent K was killed in 1969. But Agent J was recruited by K. They explain that he retains his memories of Agent K and stuff as some sort of time thing but it's never explained. Even if he does remember him, what's the story behind J? Just a rather large plot hole considering the movie is relatively tied up for the rest of the time travel stuff. Mind you the time travel isn't as complex as recentish time travel flicks like Star Trek '09 but it's airtight outside of that.
Humor is just kinda, you know, Men in Black. There's some alien jokes where aliens look funny, whoopie, and some fish out of water jokes with Will Smith in the 60's. Like he gets pulled over by some cops for being black and he neuralizes them and tells them to not be racist because a black man is driving a nice car. Ha ha. I mean it's goofy but it's no offensively stupid like an Adam Sandler flick. It has jokes, just nothing super witty.
Probably the worst part was the action scenes. The special effects here were very so-so. Which is really surprising with a budget of $215 million. Considering The Avengers had only $5 million more in budget and had a lot of big names on board, I'd expect this to look as good. Plus the action is just kinda boring. Like there's one kinda useless chase scene where they get, um, lemme find a picture...
Those things. And they just kinda roll around the city. The other action is just them shooting stuff. I don't expect some choreographed fight scene but it's kinda boring.
Despite all my negative things, it's not a horrible movie. It's cheesy, it's goofy, but it's not offensive. The time travel stuff is fun and works well, Brolin gives an excellent performance, and there's some humor in it compared to the dick and poop humor of other crap out there. It's worth watching on TV maybe.
