Just an aside. I love different RPGs and Solatorobo is shaping up to be one of the better *buys* of the year. Solatorobo: Red the Hunter tells the classic tale of a bone-headed character who meets a strange character with a strange power. Basically, it's your standard, save the world plot with some pretty memorable characters. The world is pretty fleshed out - it's a world consisting of islands on a cloud sea, and you play as a character called Red. There is a career choice called "hunters", and they basically fly from island to island to serve as general all purpose problem solvers. The islands are all themed - basically, a ghetto slum junkyard type one, a jungle/bug harvesting joint, the lovely hometown, a water/canal type city....etc. The characters are all Caninu and Felineko (basically human looking dogs and cats).
What I Like:
- It's pretty well characterized, all the characters have a vibrant personality, and they serve as your motivation. (And Red is not a complete IDIOT; which is a refreshing change from your standard bone-headed anime character.)
- Loads of character portrait animations! Red has several great ones - in which he looks shocked, disgusted, or annoyed
- Built in tutorials - every time a new game element comes up, it's introduced pretty well
What I Hate:
- One hit kills! (This gets annoying later on, in which some levels are just annoying littered with them.)
- Sound has to be on during combat --> enemies make audio cues to attacks usually.
- Boring combat/other skills --> basically, combat revolves around trying to throw an enemy/object back at them. Turns into ping-pong bosses. The other skills (you learn how to fish later) are just as annoying - tap A repeatedly - I was wondering how my thumb feels like it got BROKEN.
- Unskippable cutscenes/dialogue --> the cutscenes are gorgeous, and the dialogue is stupidly funny, but seriously? The programmers didn't think it was okay to create skippable cutscenes??????
This game has been annoying the **** out of me lately. It is frustrating to die for the 10th time, and watch the same freaking cutscene...
Questions for Tempers Who Own a 3DS System:
I'm thinking of picking up a 3DS system. I was thinking if you'd recommend me some games? I'm picking up Starfox 64, LoZ, Tales of the Abyss...etc. Is it true that 3DS games have a permanent save game structure? (That seems like a very crud move by Nintendo - only allow new games to be sold.) How is the stylus length? (I find my DSL's short - I can barely play Super Scribblenauts for long without breaking out the longer stylii.) What case/armour would you recommend for the game system?
Free Service for those Who Own 3DS Games in Canada:
Oh - I'm awaiting the delivery of the NDS Adapter Plus. Once I get it, I will be able to delete the save game data on your 3DS games. This will be a free service for fellow Canadian gbatempers who send me their games with a stamped self-addressed envelope. For all others, it will be the cost of postage - $5. (Yes, Canada Post is raising prices again, and...yuck!)
