In the late 90s/early 2000s JRPGs were top of the heap, always getting high 8s or better. And I felt that most of them deserved those scores. Even shitty JRPGs got called out: Xenosaga 2, Suikoden 4, others.
Now it feels like they just get penalized for being JRPGs. Yes, there haven't really been any blockbusters so far this gen, but the few that have been out have been getting shit like 6s when they deserve at least high 7s, only because Japanese people suck at using the Unreal engine. Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery were both competent JRPGs. If it were released in the PS2 era (even with PS2 graphics) Lost ODyssey would have been heralded as a 9.8 fukken masterpiece.
Now FPSs that don't innovate anything aside from graphics and maybe a few new weapons get ridiculously inflated scores even though they're all essentially rehashes. At least JRPGs have different battle systems, but they're the ones getting called out as stale. It's so mind-numbingly hypocritical, it's baffling.
And I'm not like I solely play JRPGs. I play pretty much every genre of games except racing. Shooters are entertaining, but that genre has gotten so stagnant it's not even funny. The only reason to not play the same one over and over again are graphical updates and the story/setting.
What do you think?
