JRPGs

In the late 90s/early 2000s JRPGs were top of the heap, always getting high 8s or better. And I felt that most of them deserved those scores. Even shitty JRPGs got called out: Xenosaga 2, Suikoden 4, others.

Now it feels like they just get penalized for being JRPGs. Yes, there haven't really been any blockbusters so far this gen, but the few that have been out have been getting shit like 6s when they deserve at least high 7s, only because Japanese people suck at using the Unreal engine. Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery were both competent JRPGs. If it were released in the PS2 era (even with PS2 graphics) Lost ODyssey would have been heralded as a 9.8 fukken masterpiece.

Now FPSs that don't innovate anything aside from graphics and maybe a few new weapons get ridiculously inflated scores even though they're all essentially rehashes. At least JRPGs have different battle systems, but they're the ones getting called out as stale. It's so mind-numbingly hypocritical, it's baffling.

And I'm not like I solely play JRPGs. I play pretty much every genre of games except racing. Shooters are entertaining, but that genre has gotten so stagnant it's not even funny. The only reason to not play the same one over and over again are graphical updates and the story/setting.

What do you think?

I agree as well, Western FPS get too much attention and I never see any appeal in any of them, no wonder I have an utter dislike for most western games.

That's pretty much it, yeah.

Nowadays, if a JRPG is not a well known franchise (à la Final Fantasy, Tales of, etc) it sucks, because it's a JRPG. Now if it is one of those "well known" types, it still sucks because: it's too well known, there's too many, there's no "innovation", or some other BS they can think of.

In my mind, a WRPG can be made, that can be 100% like Final Fantasy, and somehow it'll be a fucking 9.5 or something stupid like that. Only "true" WRPG to me would be Dragon Age. Maybe that's stretching it. Fall Out, Borderlands, and Mass Effect are all just some shooter with RPG elements tact on.

ikr

P.S. Review scores don't mean anything anymore.

market is either flooded with shitty FPS or shitty jRPG's now. its not surprising. the reason why Generic jrpg #23 gets worse scores than Gears of Duty: Bad Reach is purely because of culture. there's more "frat b0iz" who enjoy fps than there are sweaty little turds who enjoy rpgs. Reviews just cater to that, if a popular review magazine rated Lost Odyssey a 10 and Halo ODST with a 7, they'd be hammered with statements like "its a shitty magazine e.t.c" a majority of people "want to play a game, not read a book" (as quoted by a mate). Granted jRPG's had their popularity during the ps2 era, FPS (imo) was just beginning to grow on consoles. before FPS was seen as a PC only thing and now people are looking towards consoles for their fix of FPS rather than PC's.

and as for Fallout, Mass effect e.t.c being rpgs or not. Fallout is classed as a wrpg as it is quite based on stats, of both armour and weapons along with your typical DnD-esque skills. Mass Effect is classed as a WRPG as well, its pretty much Bioware's DnD engine with guns, Mass Effect 2 is just Gears of War in space with aliens with rpg elements added on. Borderlands is the same as ME2, except less rpg-esque.

We should all boycott the current gen and go back to the PS2, the true RPG king.

EXACTLY!
That's the point, see.
They're releasing last-gen games in the current-gen. And it's fucking bad.

But I think the reason generic JRPGs tend to score much lower than generic WFPSs is because JRPGs are spewed out at an enormous rate (much faster than FPSs, at least) and they usually have very low production values.

Also, turn-based combat is a lot less thrilling than blowing shit up and shooting higs.

i actually prefer turn based combat over real time or whatever they call it.... it's what got me into jrpgs really
