I think MLP is just something that sprang up because of 4chan (and after some research, apparently that is the reason), and therefore every teen on the internet watches it and uses the meme. Eh? That post was more of a joke, but Haruhi isn't exactly aimed at young girls. (certainly not to the extent that MLP is)

EDIT: @ the post above: Haruhi is typically aimed at teenage males and females. Its not a big one with younger kids (most 10 year olds and under enjoy Naruto and the like... ugh) My 14 year old sister loves the series, and I do as well.
