Thoughts on Japanophiles and such

(The thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are not meant to be hateful in nature to any one group or person. If you feel like this post attacked you, please settle it with me by PM.)

Just thought I'd do a bit of a different topic than usual. One thing I've noticed after being exposed to nerd culture (AKA gaming and whatnot) I've noticed quite a few people who are Japanophiles.

Japanophile: A person with an interest in, or love of, Japan and all things Japanese.

I put that there so our terms aren't confused. Basically, I notice a lot of people here and in other places of nerdom really like Japan. Most people relate this to love of anime/video games, but I've seen many people who don't like anime and still really like Japan (I have yet to see what can be called an "anime fan" who doesn't love Japan). Now, I don't consider anyone who likes Japan a "Weaboo" or an "Otaku". Those are terms I personally shun being called or referring to other people as (Unless in joking). I, however, can say to an extent I exhibit some qualities of being a Japanophile such as liking certain aspects of Japanese culture and wanting to learn the language as well as visit the country one day.

I want to be clear on the fact that I don't think it's a negative thing. I remember there being a large quantity of people in America who were obsessed with Indians and wanting to become one. I recall an episode of Saved by the Bell (Half of you probably just died or projectile vomited) where Zack learns he's partially an Indian and has to give a report on them. I think it's healthy to like another culture that isn't your own, as long as you're a grounded person and don't go too far with it (One guy I knew shaved his head in an effort to become a monk).

So basically, what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it's weird or bad that people can become obsessed with a foreign country such as Japan? Or do you think it's normal? What about those who are obsessed with niche part of that culture such as anime or video games? If this becomes a debate relating to something else I'll request to have the topic locked.

Comments

I enjoy heavy Japanophiles that are all about anime and that's why they want to go to Japan and such. The understanding that Japan is a whole country, and the anime market isn't exactly flourishing over there anymore seems to just go right over their heads.

Yeah right, your latest 1 thousand anime related posts shows otherwise.

I'm not a japanophile. The only place I always wanted to visit was Norway (I always relate it to Vikings) because I always thought of it as a peaceful place but after the late shooting incident I feel depressed as I think there is no safe place anywhere.

Lex: Sweden! ;D

Anyway, extreme people, like twiffle just showed us (joke or not, i don't know) always make me think they're.... a bit immature :P Feels like they have to show the world how much japanese they wish they were.. or something.. but i don't mind, to each his own!

To me, the worst is when you have someone who is so stupidly blinded they make themselves look like a retard by how they act. One example I knew was a 13 year old girl who would always end her sentences in "desu" and she would say "kawaii" instead of "cute". Not to mention all she could talk about was anime. I think having a hobby like anime is fine, but if it's all you can talk about, then you probably have a problem or are going through some kind of weird phase of puberty. I also happened to know a kid who was oddly obsessed with Toy Story back in the day when it came out to a point where I almost started hating the movie.
Then your problem, rather, seems to be with obsessive people.
And if you have an obsessive hatred of obsdessive poeple, you would then have to hate yourself.
Maybe your problem is actually with your own self-hatred, or your hatred of your own obsession.

Hmm.

Also, philia (phile) = love
Problem? I never said I had a problem with these kind of people. I simply don't like them. This isn't a case of hating what I am, because I know I'm not obsessed with anything as much as I see some people are. Except for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. I would marry that game if it was legal and possible.

Dude be honest to yourself, You participate very active in anime posts exposing many points that are incredible appealing and thoughtful. If anime/manga were to be erased it would be a really great loss to you. I can't quote your replies but anyone seeing your profile will see I'm right. In fact http://gbatemp.net/t302436-why-is-naruto-so-popular? is very well analyzed by yourself so I think you spend a lot of time watching anime and comparing the plot from one to another.

Not really, I know this because last year I barely watched any anime at all. Plus, I never said I didn't lve anime, but if it were to go away I probably wouldn't grieve over it, I'd just do something else. I don't limit myself to anime and manga.

I guess you are right. My bad here if I offended someone specially machomuu who I admire a lot. This goes to everyone except the guy telling me to shut up.

Well from my own experience ever since I have visited Tokyo last year I can't hold back the desire of going back there again and again and again as often as possible.
That city really sucked me in, I don't know what it is that makes me so "addicted" to Japan but I can say its neither anime nor games.

Its been like that for years and got even worse when I visited it.
I don't really know if you can consider it a bad thing (ive been using the word "worse" just now though...) because its really something I can always look forward to and I sure can't wait to get one year abroad as Nihon university has a partnership with mine.

I don't try to be rude, but it looked like you were attacking/trolling him. It would have been nice if you made it clear you weren't in your second post, but I digress as this is way off topic.

My arguments with Machomuu always begin bad (purposely) and end really nice, everyone following our posts in the past knows that.

So are we all okay with one another, again?

Moving back toward the topic, I don't know what it is about Japan that is so alluring to so many people.
I personally love the country. Their culture, their people, their food.......oh hell, my sushi craving is rising again.....
There are even a few anime and manga that I absolutely love.
Eventually I hope to get the chance to visit.

Call that affection whatever you want.

Its worth it, especially if you go with friends or the like.
There is so much to do in Tokyo alone its hilarious.
Ive been 2 weeks only in Tokyo and didn't get bored, I could hang out in Yoyogi Park all day.
Then going outside at night to the arcade halls watching Pros go crazy on DDR lol, I certainly miss that.

http://vimeo.com/12112529 <- That video makes me want to go back.

In 8th grade I started Japanese 1 at my local college to assist in my interest in anime and video game fandom, but now that I am in 11th grade taking Japanese 5 I have learned a whole new appreciation for the culture besides their popular media.
I no longer have a lot of time to watch the latest anime or play the latest games, but I think that's what allows me to look deeper into the culture of Japan and understand that there is much more to them and their language than the average American's perception. I think it is important when learning or going into a new culture to accept them as a whole and not just what you are familiar with.

The only reason i'd go to Japan is to scour it for rare Movic card sets I can't find online
>_>
I'd do it too if I could.

Anyways, Japanophiles are a complete pain in the ass, or they were during highschool. Not so bad on the internet. I mean, there's more of 'em...but I don't need to listen to people on the internet when I don't want to.
Obsessive people in general are REALLY annoying.

My biggest annoyance is when people are so pointlessly anti-something though, for absolutely no valid reason. Like they'll hate something because it's based in Japan.
...what
WHY? That's not a valid reason at all. It's basically obsessive, but they're being hateful instead of loving towards a topic.
