Just got a letter from my ISP

Warning me to stop downloading copyrighted content.

And that's it. It's over. No more Wii games, no more DS Games, no more PSP games, no more movies, it's all fucking over. My parents will not reason with me, they've made it pretty clear that I can't download anything. At all. Ever again.

I'm very upset, on the verge of tears.

That is all.

I've got a pile of these letters. it's really not as big a deal as they make it seem. just join a private tracker or signup with usenet and you won't get anymore of these.

Were you using any protection programs like PeerBlock?

I rarely use torrents anymore, stick with direct downloads, and us ip blockers/limit upload speed when using torrents, also randomize your port every time you use a torrent app.

That's why I use my next door neighbour's poorly protected wireless broadband. That way if my downloading becomes an issue it's her that gets in the shit, not me. To be fair, she deserves it. She's a total bitch whose idea of child care it to punch the child in the face until he understands.

peer block doesn't really offer any real protection. it only blocks known ip's. if someone uses an ip thats not on your list to track you down then they've got you.
if your going to torrent private sites are the way to go.

I'm curious how so many people get caught, or warned.
My Dad got warned before, but he doesn't check the info on any torrent he downloads so he probably gets a few tracked ones.

I've never been warned...and I never found it hard to avoid getting warned.

who do they think they are snooping on what people do i download what i want wen i want i dare them to send me a letter

lol, settle down.

It's from a movie I downloaded months ago from a public tracker. I wasn't a member of private trackers at the time, but now i am, so I shouldn't have any problems anymore. I've tried to explain this to my parents but they will not fucking listen. They're convinced that the ISP will fine us if they catch us and they won't listen when I try to tell them that private trackers are safe.

My ISP is mediacom.

I cannot get any new games anymore. At all. Except for the occasional few from grandma (That suck) on Christmas. And that's it. And that sucks.
EDIT-Crap, sorry for the DP. I'm used to vBulletin where it automerges double posts.

Shit..you should call the police or something!!!!

I got a letter like that years ago at home. I stopped torrenting.

Megaupload ftw. Oh and living away from home so the internet stuff is the landlord's problem.

One word - <snip>
I had the same issues but if you can afford a few bucks a month, you can torrent download using servers outside of the reach of ISPs and then download to your computer via FTP once it's done. Plus they are crazy fast for the most part. Plus no more letters cause they can't track it. Not that you should be pirating anything. Many of them don't allow for public trackers, though. Demonoid is usually allowed, however.

You should be fine, I just looked over your companies policies and it states that the letter was sent pretty much to cover their own hide. They basically sent you the letter to inform you that you'd be in deep shit if the people who own the material you downloaded decide to take action, and they won't be liable if they do so. Often times you can ignore it, but you may be one of the unlucky few that gets picked out of the bunch. You really shouldn't worry though, they mostly go for uploaders.

Just because you download off of other peoples' networks doesn't make you entirely safe, and if you get caught you'd get yourself in a bigger hole then if you did it on your own network.
