Irritating Facebook Campaign

Hey guys!

I hope everyone is doing well? I sincerely hope I've blogged in the right place, but yeah. I'm going to blog about something really silly and weird so... I'm sorry :(

For those of you that have Facebook, perhaps you've seen the following campaign:

'Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same, for the NSPCC. Until Monday (December 6th), there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of memories. This is a campaign to stop violence against children'

Firstly, this campaign was not actually started by the NSPCC! Maybe I'm just a bit cynical but... I find it really insulting? It irritates me that this campaign probably wasn't designed to fight violence against children, but probably someone wanting to perform glorified chain mail. Secondly, people will change their profile picture to make it seem like they're giving support. However, if it came to donating money or volunteering for the charity itself, I doubt they'll be so quick to act. I would like to add that I do think it's good to raise awareness of such issues! Perhaps campaigns like this will inspire some people to actually take physical action. So maybe... it has some use. Essentially, I just feel aggravated that most people think they're doing something special when they're not!

Is that weird? Maybe I'm just thinking too much into it, because I know that's the nature of Facebook! It's just this is the only viral campaign that has actually made me feel disgusted. I'm sorry for having a mostly one sided opinion also :(

...which, in reality, doesn't help a lot if you don't know that person.

I did it for the lulz. I just looked at the end where it said "this is to stop child abuse" and just kinda thought "WTF", and then did it anyway.

Okay so there is nothing to gain from changing your picture, but what is the harm in it? I mean, people are going to follow the crowd, and what are we going to do about it? I suppose I can see why some people are aggravated, because it's not doing anything, but it's not like it's hurting anybody. It's just Facebook.

That's just strange.

But the point is you pay money for the ribbon and a percentage of that money goes to the appropriate charities. These Facebook profile changers aren't actually giving anything to anybody and are thus helping nobody.

Absolutely this!

I'd like to say again that I strongly support raising awareness! I just don't like the way in which people claim changing their profile picture is supporting a campaign. Then, as their charitable act for the day, follow it up with:

'Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same for the NSPCC. Until Monday (December 6), there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of memories.... This is a campaign to stop violence against children.'

I'm sort of in two minds, because if it does inspire people to take action, then that's great! But... my point is that a significant proportion of people will literally do nothing.

This is also very true and you're absolutely right. There is no harm in changing your picture at all. I just don't want people to delude themselves into thinking they're doing something noble :)

(And yes, some people may just like cartoon characters lol)

Yeah, I can see what you mean. I'll have to agree that I just like cartoon characters. ;)

The harm comes when people think this is an acceptable way to support a charity.

The next time there's a news report about an abused child these ludicrous people will be scratching their heads thinking "But how could this happen? I put a picture of Benny from Top Cat on my Facebook profile and everything."

Well, I just think I have to disagree with you on that. The people aren't ludicrous for wanting to raise awareness for it. I bet you a lot of the people who are changing their pictures are doing it for fun. I highly doubt they are really thinking to themselves, "Man, putting this picture up is going to save lots of children."

Obviously the real answer would be for everybody to change their profile picture to Chris Hansen.

lol'd :P

IF 10 million people do this and only 10 people actually go out and either volunteer to help with abused kids or donate money to a charity that helps those kids then wouldnt the campaign be a success. I can understand the people that say it is ineffective but the people that say they are irritated by it must just hate kids or are child abusers themselves.

Then I must be judging them based on the people on my Facebook page specifically. Honestly, the best thing some of them could have done for the benefit of children was to not have any. ;)

I, like many others, used this as an excuse to change my display pic into something nerdy and not have anyone care.

To be honest, I wouldn't have given any donations to the nspcc this weekend with or without this campaign, I would if the chance came up for example someone with a charity bucket but the opportunity hasn't presented itself..
I just changed my picture for fun, no harm done whatsoever.
I don't believe me changing my picture has in any significant way helped any children or anything special.

Try and see it from another point of view?

And even if this was just a 'glorified chain mail', where's the harm in going along with it?
