Subs are superior to dubs.

So for the past few weeks I've been slowly watching the anime series known as Hunter x Hunter. The story of Gon Freecss, becoming a Hunter to search for his father, Ging Freecss! I've read the first ten volumes of the manga so I decided to watch it instead. I prefer moving pictures to the still ones. So I look up Hunter x Hunter the series online and decide to check it out. I see it's dubbed but hey who needs to listen to anime of your own language when you can just read the amazingly perfect never wrong subtitles!

So I've made it established to myself through the manga that their names are Gon and Ging of the Freecss family. Right out the gate the subs are spelling out his name as Gon Freaks. Okay we're off to a great start. Shortly after we're told of his amazing father, "Jin Freaks".

jinapngyd.png

Okay, instead of Ging Freecss we've got Jin Freaks. This too will bug me but hey, it's the first episode. I'm sure they'll fix it as it goes on like most anime, right?

jinbpngun.png

So we move on into a few episodes, and here we see him called by Jin again. Haven't fixed their mistake yet I see. Keep in mind that the anime's a year and a half older then the manga, where all manga sub groups have been spelling it right.

Anyway....so now we're at Episode 31. The hunter exams are over and our hero Gon is now an officially licensed hunter! Huzzahs are in order! One of the first things Gon and his friends end up doing is using their new class to look up information of his father on the internet. Great idea, I'm sure his dad exists. Let's look up Jin Freaks on that ol' internet!

Did you catch that? Here, let me point it out.

In closing: Subs are indeed superior to dubs. Always. Thank you for your time.

UPDATE: I am now at Episode 47. As I'm sure you all remember, it was only episode 31 where the anime spelled his correct name out, yet the subs still got it wrong. 16 episodes later, did they fix it!?

Nope! =D

I prefer the fansubs to fandubs(rare), commercial subs and dubs as it has been my experience that a good fansubbing team will take the time to be as accurate as possible and even explain certain elements of the script/translation they used.

Fansubbers also don't have the luxury of an actual script sent to them and their translators need to do this by ear( Maggie =/= Maggy ). They also work these thing out at a fairly rapid pace with their fansubs comming out as fast as 3 to 7 days after the initial TV airing in Japan. If you go to their site they sometimes have listings of terms/phrases that were translated a certain way and why

If I don't like how a group subbed something I go to another. If I don't find another, since I didn't pay them anything, I live with what they make. If I actually knew Japanese I would prefer the raws.
^ anime like bleach take less than 24 hours. c:
depends on the group really. nowadays you can expect decent quality subs for any remotely popular show to be subbed within 24 hours of release.

There are some truely horrible subs out there. Sometimes a tiny mistake can make a really big difference, I remember getting most of the way through Helsing before realising Integra(l) Hellsing wasn't a man  And season 3-4 of Yu-Gi-Oh was terrible in places, the subbing group were not native English speakers so the grammar was all over the place and you had to have an episode guide open just to figure out what was going on sometimes. You appreciate the effort these people put in though, but yes the results can be a bit hit and miss.

I think in the past dubs were awful. Now American producers have realised cartoons aren't just for kids they've gotten a lot better, but the fans are too set in their ways to notice. It depends on the series; the Death Note dub was brilliant.

Some series benefit from localisation, not changing the storylines but some jokes when literally translated from Japanese make no sense whatsoever to a western audience. Some of those Japanese voices you love so much might indicate a really annoying personality to a native, whereas to us it just sounds like another Japanese voice. You can say some English voices are really annoying, but maybe that's how the character is supposed to come across. It's when they change the plot that dubs fall on their arse, Yu-Gi-Oh season 2-3 was terrible and didn't even make sense.

As for correcting names halfway through a series, I kinda find that annoying. The fan translations of the Death Note manga switched from Raito to Light after volume 1 of the official English translation came out, it's quite hard to rename a character in your head after 50 or so chapters. I'd prefer them to acknowledge the mistake but continue as they were.

This, feels so much nicer to hear Japanse voices in any Anime.

Some anime series I've watched are dubbed very well. You can get both good and bad subs/dubs. If there's little lost in the dub, I'll always choose that first. I prefer watching than trying to read.

I prefer dubs. If I really wanted to read that much, I would just go to the manga instead. Adult Swim has made me realize that not all dubs have to be horribly censored and kiddyish.

Gimme some scripts I'll dub some shit with my shitty nasally voice, but my voice shall change soon because I'm getting nasal surgery on motherfucking monday

Holy fuck, this thread. "SUBS R BETTR BECUZ DEY HAVE KAWAII JAPANESE VOICES WICH R SUPRIOR TO BAKA GAIJIN AMREICN VOICES ECKSDEEE EXEPT EPIK FAIL SUBS ECKKSSDEEEEE"

It's true that most dubs aren't that good, however I can think of plenty of good dubs (nightmare mode: no Steven Blum or Johnny Yong Bosch) that are superior to (or at least on par with) their Japanese counterparts.

And to Gaisuto, things like that will always happen with subs and sub groups. There's three things you can do:
1. Find another, better sub group. I suggest hitting up anidb.net
2. Learn Japanese
3. Suck it up and deal with the shit subs

Lol, that's pretty... sad? funny? I dunno, but I lol'd.

In my opinion, subs are usually better than dubs, but not always. Also, you have to realize that a certain anime will usually have more than 1 subbing group working on it. Maybe the subs that you got were from a group that is known to have done a crappy job? Who knows. A good place to check is MAL. Just type in the name of the anime and scroll down to the section that shows all the groups that have subbed it. The one with the most positive votes is usually the best.

Yeah, as you can see, there's quite a few.

Good dubs > Subs > 4kids dub

Just GG's usual trolling. Still pretty funny. That's why I tend to avoid them most of the time, though they are fairly accurate. They do a lot of Americanization and trolling like that TL note, so I actually went with Eclipse rather than them... Though they only did R2. I'll still pick GG if they're the only good group doing a series though. Their most recent trolling attempt was switching their last/surnames with their first names causing total confusion.

Anyways, just pick out fansubs from reputable groups which you can check on MyAnimeList, though as usual, fanboys do vote for their favorite groups (lol Eclipse vs GG fanboys). Unfortunately, the fansubbing industry sometimes oversubs an anime so there's no point in even having so many subbed while anime get's picked up by trashy groups or no groups at all. Or maybe it came from the time where subs were just plain terrible. Or maybe the subs are all right but they never changed the names and never made V2s.

And streaming anime? Maybe they just picked out the fastest subbing anime meaning the quality of the translations were terrible?

Another series with pretty good dubbing was Fullmetal Alchemist. I was pretty amazed.

I love subs.

Really, though, Japanese voices are a lot better than the English ones. Although this goes both ways: if I watch an American/English movie and I only know Japanese, I'm going to want the subtitles instead of voice overs.

This is one anime, however, that I like as the dub (although the sub is still better). Fullmetal Alchemist always seemed to have good English voice actors to me (and the story was amazing itself).

Damn fucking straight. Cowboy bebop, FMA, and Black Lagoon comes to mind (And probably the only ones.)

Too bad that's about the only good dubs I've seen that's superior to it's Japanese counterpart.

kisamas who prefer gaijin dubs instead of hailing the voice of glorious nippon seiyuus deserve to be hung in the name of our glorious emperor-sama. NIPPON BANZAI
